Broncos Hold on for Shootout Win over Pats

Swift Current Broncos News Release

REGINA, SK - The Swift Current Broncos (9-24-1-2) had a 4-2 lead at the halfway mark of the third period against the Regina Pats (11-20-3-2) Saturday, but held on to win the game 5-4 in a shootout.

The Pats jumped out to a 2-0 lead halfway through the first as Carson Denomie scored twice, once in a power play to give the Pats the early momentum.

Down 2-0 after the first period, the Broncos would score twice in the middle frame to pull even. First was Eric Houk as he swept in a loose puck after Alex Moar's shot was blocked, but rolled right to Houk in the slot for his second of the season.

Later in the period, Swift Current came in on an odd-man rush with Tyler Smithies carrying the puck on the left wing. Smithies faked like he was going to shoot, but then slid the puck across to Garrett Sambrook who fired home his second goal in as many games to tie the game.

The Broncos then pulled ahead in the third, first was Kye Buchanan for his first career WHL goal. On another odd-man rush into the Pats zone, Buchanan held on before wiring a shot over Max Paddock's glove 2:30 into the third.

Ethan Regnier pushed the Broncos lead to 4-2 with a power-play goal 9:01 into the period. After trying to pass the puck off, it deflected back to Regnier down low and he cut across the crease to get Paddock to open his five hole and give the Broncos a two-goal lead.

The Broncos then ran into penalty trouble in the second half of the period and the Pats took advantage. First was Drew Englot deflecting a shot past Reece Klassen to cut the lead to one with nine minutes to play.

With Paddock on the bench for the extra attacker, Zach Wytinck's shot through traffic beat a screened Klassen to tie the game with 1:22 to go.

After the Broncos couldn't take advantage of a power play in overtime, the game went to a shootout. After Denomie was stopped, Regnier put the Broncos on top with a backhander that went off Paddock's skate and in.

Klassen turned aside Holmes to give Sergei Alkhimov a chance to win the game, but he was stopped by Paddock.

Jan Cikhart needed to score to keep the game alive, but he missed the net and the Broncos won 5-4, sweeping the weekend series.

The Broncos are now set to wrap up the weekend as the Seattle Thunderbirds roll into town for a 4:00 start.
