January 5, 2020 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Moose Jaw Warriors News Release
19-year-old goalie Adam Evanoff was a wall for the Moose Jaw Warriors on Saturday, making 46 saves to lead the team to a 3-0 win over the Red Deer Rebels at Enmax Centrium.
Throughout the opening period, the Warriors and Rebels went toe-to-toe as they battled up the ice looking to get on to the scoreboard.
Moose Jaw was able to win several battles along the offensive zone boards and did a good job pushing the puck towards the net for quality chances.
On the other side of the red line, Red Deer had a couple of good drives to the Moose Jaw net off the rush, and they had two power-plays to get some zone time and shots.
The teams combined for 25 shots in the opening frame but went into the first intermission scoreless.
In the second period, Red Deer had a consistent presence inside the Warriors zone which led to a 14-6 advantage on the period shot clock.ÃÂ However, Adam Evanoff was solid in the frame, making numerous key saves to keep the Rebels off the scoreboard.
Warriors leading scorer Ryder Korczak had the best chance of the period for Moose Jaw.
On the power-play inside the final 95 seconds of the period, the Warriors found Korczak between the circles where he let a quick shot go that beat Rebels goalie Ethan Anders, but it went off the crossbar which kept the game scoreless.
Moose Jaw had 25 seconds of power-play time to start the third period.
They were not able to score but they were able to get control of the puck deep in Red Deer territory.
Just as the Rebels got to even-strength, Brayden Tracey set up Ryder Korczak inside the left circle where he ripped in his 10th of the season to give the Warriors the lead.
Red Deer had a great opportunity to tie the game when they sprung Jayden Grubbe for a breakaway but he was denied by Evanoff.
Getting to the seven-minute mark of the period, Carson Sass took a shot from the Rebels right line that was blocked.ÃÂ The puck came to Tate Popple in the high-slot where he took a quick shot that found the back of the net, his fourth of the season gave the Warriors some breathing room.
Red Deer desperately tried to claw their way back into the game, they had an 18-7 advantage on the shot clock and in the final moments pulled their goalie which led to more pressure.
The Warriors bent but did not break, they were strong inside their zone and eventually added an empty-net goal from Popple with six seconds left to finish the game.
Adam Evanoff made 46 saves, recording his first shutout of the season, and was named the game's first star.ÃÂ Tate Popple finished with two goals, Ryder Korczak had a goal and two points, Brayden Tracey picked up two assists, and Carson Sass got an assist which was his first point as a Warrior.
The Warriors weekend road trip to Alberta wraps up Sunday in Calgary with their final meeting of the season against the Hitmen.ÃÂ Catch all the action on Country 100 starting with the PreGame Show at 4:40 pm.
Moose Jaw is back at home on Wednesday, October 8th when they take on the Edmonton Oil Kings.ÃÂ Tickets are available at the Mosaic Place Box Office or online at www.mjwarriors.ca.
