Syracuse Crunch News Release
CRUNCH EARN POINTS IN 10 STRAIGHT: The Crunch have gotten hot right at the right time. They have picked up at least one point in every game since March 11, going 8-0-1-1 in that span to climb into seventh place in the Eastern Conference with just six games remaining in the regular season. During those 10 games, the Crunch have earned seven out of a possible eight points against Adirondack, who currently sits just four points behind the Crunch. In that stretch, Peter Holland leads the way with 12 points. Riley Holzapfel has 11 points and J.F. Jacques has nine points in the last 10 games. The only team with a better record in the last 10 games is Norfolk, who has won 22 straight games. The last six games have gone into overtime or a shootout with the Crunch going 4-2 in those contests.
TARKKI'S RUN: A major reason behind the Crunch's surge at the end of the season is due to the play of goaltender Iiro Tarkki. He leads all goaltenders with 10 wins in the month of March. He is 10-1-0 in his last 12 games, with a 2.17 goals-against average and a .933 save percentage. The free agent signing allowed three or fewer goals in 10 out of his last 12 starts. Tarkki has been a workhorse in goal all season. He is third in the league in saves and seventh in total minutes.
UPCOMING OPPONENTS:
BINGHAMTON (OTTAWA SENATORS): The Crunch complete their eight game season series with the Binghamton Senators with the back end of a home-and-home series. The Crunch took the first game of the home-and-home series, 2-1, in overtime on Saturday. Kyle Cumiskey was credited with the game-winner after it went in off of Binghamton defenseman Mark Borowiecki's stick, to help improve the Crunch to 5-1-1-0 against the Senators this season. Binghamton remains in last place in the East Division and the Eastern Conference. Mike Hoffman leads Binghamton in points, while Robin Lehner has been the main goalie for the Senators with Ben Bishop in Ottawa.
BRIDGEPORT (NEW YORK ISLANDERS): The Crunch take on the Bridgeport Sound Tigers for the second and final time of the season on Friday. Their only other meeting was a 5-4 shootout win for Bridgeport on January 28 at the War Memorial Arena. Bridgeport scored two late third-period goals to send the game into the extra session. Bridgeport is battling Connecticut for first place in the Northeast Division. The Sound Tigers currently have the edge, 83 points to 80 with six games remaining. With All-Star Casey Cizikas on recall, forward Rhett Rakhshani and defenseman Matt Donovan share the team lead in points with 42. Goaltender Kevin Poulin leads the team with 22 wins.
HERSHEY (WASHINGTON CAPITALS): Saturday will mark the sixth and final meeting of the season between the Crunch and the Hershey Bears. Hershey has won four out of the five contests, including a 2-1 win at the War Memorial on February 10. The Bears clinched the playoffs this weekend, and sit in fifth place in the Eastern Conference, two points behind the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. With Keith Aucoin on recall to Washington, Chris Bourque has taken over the team and league lead in points with 90. Veteran Dany Sabourin has seen most of the workload down the stretch in goal.
