Helmer Named Barons Recpient of IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year Award

Oklahoma City - The Oklahoma City Barons are proud to announce that Bryan Helmer has been named the team's winner of the IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year award for his outstanding contributions to the Oklahoma City community during the 2011-12 season.

Bryan brought with him to Oklahoma City his Helmer's Heroes program. Born out of an experience with his daughter Rylan, Helmer's Heroes provides tickets to a game, recognition on the videoboard, a chance to meet Bryan and a tour of the locker room for one lucky child who has experienced tough medical issues early in their life.

Helmer is now one of 30 finalists for the AHL's 2011-12 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award, honoring the overall IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year. The league award is named after the former Hershey Bears forward and AHL All-Star who died in 1997 following a 16-month battle with leukemia. The winner of the Yanick Dupre Memorial Award will be announced by the American Hockey League in the coming weeks.

The Barons return home to take on the Hamilton Bulldogs, AHL affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens, Tuesday. The weekend concludes with home games Friday and Saturday. Friday, the Barons tangle with the Peoria Rivermen, AHL affiliate of the St. Louis Blues. Saturday, the Chicago Wolves, AHL affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks, visit Oklahoma City. All three games start at 7 p.m. at the Cox Convention Center. All three games can be heard on the Barons flagship station, 96.1 KXY.
