CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte Checkers are proud to announce that Bobby Sanguinetti has been named the team's winner of the IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year award for his outstanding contributions to the Charlotte community during the 2011-12 season.

Despite injuries which have sidelined him for 60 games throughout the past two seasons, Sanguinetti has been active in many of the Checkers' community service projects, including school visits, fan-related events and hospital visits and is always willing to lend a helping hand.

Along with team captain Brett Sutter (Special Olympics) and goaltender Mike Murphy (Presbyterian Hospital), Sanguinetti donated four season tickets to a local charity and chose Camp Care, which provides children with cancer the opportunity to go to camp and have fun. More than 100 members of Camp Care's family have been guests of his this season.

Sanguinetti, whose sister was a recipient of organ donation as a child, was also a keynote speaker and made a substantial donation at the inaugural "Checkers with the Checkers" tournament and fundraiser, which raised more than $5,000 for the Children's Organ Transplant Association.

Sanguinetti is now one of 30 finalists for the AHL's 2011-12 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award, honoring the overall IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year. The league award is named after the former Hershey Bears forward and AHL All-Star who died in 1997 following a 16-month battle with leukemia. The winner of the Yanick Dupre Memorial Award will be announced by the American Hockey League in the coming weeks.

Fan Appreciation Day is set for Saturday, April 7 at noon when the Checkers host the Abbotsford Heat in the first ever AHL/NBA doubleheader at Time Warner Cable Arena. For ticket and promotional information, please visit www.gocheckers.com.
