Jason King Named St. John's IceCaps' 2011-12 IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year

St. John's, Newfoundland - The St. John's IceCaps are proud to announce that Jason King has been named the team's winner of the IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year award for his outstanding contributions to the St. John's community during the 2011-12 season.

King has been a true ambassador for the IceCaps from the moment he became a member of the hockey club. Throughout the season, he has been a leader for community appearances.

King started the season as a leader during training camp when the team attended the "Beyond Words Tribute Dinner," a fundraising event for the families affected by the 9/11 tragedy. King met with local dignitaries, families and the many others who were in attendance.

In January, King participated in the grand opening of the Bay Bulls Recreation Centre. This building was a major undertaking by a community-minded group in a town situated 30 minutes from St. John's. King attended this event and was by far the most popular person in attendance. He spent his time meeting with local youth, playing video games and table top hockey, and visiting the attached daycare and showing a genuine interest in what was happening in the community.

Perhaps the most moving event of the year was the IceCaps Janeway Children's Hospital Visit. King was joined by other members of the IceCaps on this visit, but he was the leader of the group and a true ambassador for the team on this day. While on site at the hospital, he took extra time with each patient, and his genuine personality shone through as he listened to the children and their parents in an effort to learn more about them and what they were going through.

As the visit was about to end, King was informed of a young boy who was recently burned very badly in an accident in Corner Brook. King took extra time - above and beyond what was expected of him - to go visit this young boy. The boy was thrilled with the special visit and the family was appreciative of his sincere compassion and willingness to spend time with their child.

King is now one of 30 finalists for the AHL's 2011-12 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award, honoring the overall IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year. The league award is named after the former Hershey Bears forward and AHL All-Star who died in 1997 following a 16-month battle with leukemia. The winner of the Yanick Dupre Memorial Award will be announced by the American Hockey League in the coming weeks.
