Warriors Win Shootout Thriller over Winnipeg

Moose Jaw Warriors News Release

The winning streak continued for the Moose Jaw Warriors on Friday night, topping the Winnipeg ICE, 5-4, in a shootout at Mosaic Place.

"We handled the game really well," Warriors forward Brayden Yager said after the win. "It was up and down with goals going back-and-forth, but we stuck with it and got the job done."

The Warriors have now won five straight, including back-to-back wins over the top-two teams in the Western Hockey League in Winnipeg and Edmonton.

The win also ended an 11-game losing skid for the Warriors against the ICE, who had won all three previous meetings this season.

"We just beat the top-two teams in the CHL, so obviously, we're rolling right now and we're going to keep our confidence high and try and keep buzzing here," Yager said.

Yager scored two goals in 16 seconds in the second period and added another in the shootout to lead the way for the Warriors in the victory.

Ryder Korczak had a goal and two points in regulation and thensealed the win with the second goal in the shootout for Moose Jaw.

20-year-old goalie Carl Tetachuk turned away 41 saves in the Warriors' net.

"We fought hard, Winnipeg's a great team and I thought for the most part all night, we were real competitive, playing the right way and we were rewarded for how we worked," Warriors assistant coach Scott King said.

The game had two lead changes in the second period and then the teams traded goals back-and-forth in the third period.

King said the Warriors stayed positive on the bench throughout the ebbs and flow of the game.

"Everybody was really encouraging of each other, we knew we were playing a pretty good game, we stuck with it," he said. "I like the way we faced some adversity throughout the game and just kept battling back."

After a scoreless first period, Winnipeg opened the scoring when Tanner Brown scored 1:23 into the second period.

The Warriors responded later in the period when Yager scored his 21st and 22nd goals of the season just 16 seconds part to put Moose Jaw in front.

The ICE would tie the game before the period was out, however, as Jakin Smallwood finished off a 2-on-1 with 22 seconds left in the second.

Winnipeg struck again early in the third with Mikey Milne roofing a backhand over Tetachuk just 1:11 into the final period.

The Warriors battled back again though and Robert Baco scored his ninth of the season just before the midway point of the period to tie the game back up at 3-3.

Conor Geekie would respond for Winnipeg, restoring their one-goal lead, just 2:05 later.

Moose Jaw didn't go away and with just 2:59 to play in regulation, Ryder Korczak finished off a great pass from Baco for his 15th of the season, tying the game at 4-4.

The two teams went back-and-forth in overtime, but neither team could find the winner.

Into the shootout, Tetachuk turned away both attempts from the ICE, stopping Connor McClennon and Matthew Savoie, while Yager and Korczak scored on their attempts to give Moose Jaw the win.

Winnipeg outshot the Warriors 45-28 overall in the game, while neither team scored on the power play. Moose Jaw went 0-for-1 and Winnipeg was 0-for-2.

The Warriors are back on the ice coming up on Saturday night when they host the Regina Pats in a Trans-Canada Clash at Mosaic Place. Puck drops at 7 p.m.
