Warriors Silenced by Oil Kings

MOOSE JAW, Sask. - The Moose Jaw Warriors' season-opening win streak came to an end on Friday night against the Edmonton Oil Kings.

Edmonton pushed early in the first period. The Oil Kings potted the first goal of the game off the stick of Jack Toogood. Toogood struck again to make the score 2 - 0. Joe Iginla added Edmonton's third goal of the game to leave the Warriors down by three by the end of the first period.

In the second period, Ethan MacKenzie netted his first of the season while the teams played 4 - 4 following matching roughing penalties for Captain Lynden Lakovic and Ethan MacKenzie. Mirosalv Holinka added his third goal of the season just before the six-minute mark of the second period. This goal marked the end of the night for Matthew Hutchison, and Kyle Jones took the crease for the Warriors to mark his second appearance in the WHL.

With just under two minutes remaining in the second period, Brady Ness and Jack Toogood were assessed roughing penalties. Edmonton's Lukas Sawchyn was assessed a tripping penalty only nine seconds later. The team's finished the period playing four on three.

Matching penalties were the theme of the third period. To start, the Warriors had 23 seconds on the 2-man advantage and a further nine seconds on the man-advantage. The Warriors couldn't capitalize on either advantage. Less than four minutes into the period Kash Andresen and Adam Jecho were called for matching minor penalties. Andresen for cross-checking and Jecho for slashing.

With just over 10 minutes to play, Noah Degenstein and Noa Ta'amu were assessed minor penalties, Degenstein for roughing and Ta'amu for interference. Josh Lee was called for hooking with less than 10 minutes to play. Blake Fiddler and Ethan Semeniuk were called for offsetting minor penalties, Fiddler for hooking and Semeniuk for holding. With less than three minutes remaining in the third period, Lynden Lakovic was given a ten-minute misconduct.

With just over two minutes remaining, Brady Ness and Brady Craik were ejected following five-minute fighting majors. Brady Ness was assessed an additional two-minute minor penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Matthew Hutchison and Kyle Jones combined for 15 saves on 20 shots.

At the opposite end, Ethan Simcoe went 30 for 31 in the Oil Kings' win.

The Warriors went one for five on the penalty kill and zero for two on the power play. At the Hangar tomorrow night, the Warriors are continuing their Agriculture Appreciation Weekend presented by JGL. On the concourse, fans can bid on the game-worn and game-issued specialty agriculture jerseys.
