Swift Current Broncos News Release

In their only meeting of the season, the Swift Current Broncos delivered a gutsy performance in front of a home crowd, rallying from an early 3-0 deficit to defeat the Vancouver Giants 7-5 on Friday night.

The start was unideal for the home side as Vancouver stunned the Broncos with three goals in the opening 92 seconds. Jakob Oreskovic opened the scoring just 37 seconds in, followed by Cameron Schmidt only 10 seconds later. Tobias Tomik added a power play goal at 1:32, putting the Broncos down three almost immediately.

Rather than folding, Swift Current regrouped and clawed their way back into the game. A power play goal by Stepan Kuryachenkov at 17:24 of the first period gave the Broncos their first sign of life and shifted the momentum heading into the intermission.

The second period was a turning point. Just 1:39 in, Hudson Darby notched his first goal as a Bronco to make it 3-2. Vancouver briefly pushed the lead back to two on a goal from Ty Halaburda at 7:06, but Swift Current responded with three straight goals in under nine minutes. Anthony Wilson made it 4-3 just 32 seconds later, then Jace McFaul tied the game on the power play at 15:08. Darby added his second of the night just over a minute later to give Swift Current its first lead of the game. However, the Giants responded quickly, tying the game once more with a goal from Colton Alain at 16:46.

The teams entered the third period deadlocked at five, but Swift Current held firm and took control late. With just under four minutes to play, McFaul buried his second goal of the night, finishing a setup from Caleb Potter and Brennan Brown to give the Broncos a 6-5 lead. In the final seconds, Connor Dale iced the game with an empty-net goal at 19:57.

After the slow start, Bronco's goaltender Joey Rocha steadied himself and finished with 26 saves on 31 shots. Swift Current edged Vancouver 32-31 in shots on goal and made their special teams count, going 2-for-5 on the power play while holding the Giants to 1-for-4.

Head coach Dean DeSilva praised his team's mental toughness after the comeback win.

"Resiliency. After the first two and a half minutes, it would have been easy to fold our tent and quit. But this team doesn't know what quit means," DeSilva said. "Players took a breath and stuck with our game plan. There is no such thing as a perfect game, but we didn't allow our mistakes to dictate the outcome."

The Broncos won't have long to celebrate the comeback, as they return to the ice Saturday night, October 4, to host the Regina Pats at the InnovationPlex.
