Last Time Out

After a scoreless first period in which Portland fired 16 shots on goal, Everett broke through in the second. Shea Busch opened the scoring just past the 11-minute mark, followed by Clarke Schaefer three minutes later to make it 2-0. Portland got on the board late, with Nathan Brown scoring his first in the Western Hockey League with 1:45 left to cut the deficit and shift momentum.

In the third, Alex Weiermair, back from Vegas Golden Knights training camp, tied it less than five minutes in. A back-and-forth period followed, forcing overtime.

Just 57 seconds into the extra frame, Nathan Free buried the game-winner, sealing a comeback road win. Winterhawks goalie Ondřej Štěbeták stood tall with a career-high performance.

Milestone Moments

Veteran forward Ryan Miller skated in his 100th Western Hockey League game last Saturday in Everett. The Medicine Hat, Alberta native enters the weekend with 49 career points as a Winterhawk (23G, 26A) and has recorded a point in each of the three games he's played this season (1G, 2A). Miller was selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the fifth round of the 2025 NHL Draft and returned from the club's rookie camp just in time to suit up for the season opener in Prince George on September 19th.

On the same night, second-year goaltender Ondřej Štěbeták appeared in his 50th WHL game, turning aside 50 shots in the Winterhawks' overtime win against the Silvertips. It marked just the second time in his WHL career that the Jihlava, Czechia, native has faced 50 or more shots - the first came in a double-overtime victory against the Prince George Cougars in Game 4 of the first round of the 2025 WHL Playoffs, where he stopped 49 shots to help secure the win on April 2. Štěbeták joined the Utah Mammoth rookie camp this summer, gaining valuable experience with the NHL's newest franchise before returning to Portland ahead of the season.

A Peek at Penticton

Penticton earned its first win in WHL franchise history on September 20th, defeating the Vancouver Giants in Langley, BC. The victory was powered by a two-point performance (1G, 1A) from veteran forward Brady Birnie. Acquired from the Swift Current Broncos in last season's WHL expansion draft, Birnie brought a wealth of experience, having played 267 games and tallied 169 points (72G, 97A) with the Broncos. Now in his 20-year-old campaign with Penticton, he has recorded five points in four games, including one goal and a team-leading four assists. British Columbia native Diego Johnson leads the team in goals, scoring three times in the four games he's played for the Vees.
