Warriors Head to Central Division for Two Games
November 5, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Moose Jaw Warriors News Release
For the first time in 623 days, the Moose Jaw Warriors have loaded up the bus and headed to Alberta.
The Warriors are on the road in the Central Division for games in Lethbridge and Medicine Hat this weekend.
"They can be long bus rides, but honestly, it's the best time," Captain Daemon Hunt said. "Just to be with the guys and being on a long road trip, that's where the memories are made and I enjoy it a lot."
17-year-old defenceman Denton Mateychuk got a taste of life on the road as a 15-year-old, but then spent last season in the Subway WHL Hub with the team.
"We're excited to play some other teams that weren't in the hub, so that will be a cool experience," he said. "It's pretty much the first time for me, I did a little bit when I was 15, but it's the first real road trip I've had with the guys."
The Warriors head into the road trip with one win in their last six games, which came against the Tigers last Friday.
The team will be looking to get back on track after falling 4-3 to the Pats in Regina on Wednesday.
"We still have some guys that we're waiting on here 11 games in to show what they're capable of," Warriors head coach Mark O'Leary said. "We're getting a little bit tired of waiting on potential, we need to be better than this and we're not satisfied in the least."
O'Leary said he's hoping a few days on the road together will be the recipe to heal the team's struggles.
"We're excited about getting to a couple buildings that we haven't been to in a little while, just a chance of scenery might help things out," he said, "But at the end of the day, that doesn't change what we expect and the execution needs to be there."
The Warriors will receive a big boost to open the road trip as Hunt returns from a four-game suspension when the team faces the Hurricanes on Friday night.
Hunt said he's ready to get back on the ice.
"It's been a pretty long four games to just sit back and watch," he said.
The Warriors went 1-3 during their four games without their captain. Hunt said watching from the stands, he's seen some good and bad from the team.
"The guys have been competing real hard and being hard on pucks, but I think our third periods really need to get better, it seems like we can't close out games," he said. "We're getting better every day and making sure we finish the game hard is really key."
The Warriors will look to get back in the win column when they square off with the Hurricanes at the ENMAX Centre on Friday night and then they travel to Medicine Hat to battle the Tigers at Co-op Place on Saturday.
Puck drops at 7 p.m. for both games. Voice of the Warriors James Gallo will have all the action on Country 100, starting with the Pre-Game Show at 6:40 p.m.
