Rebels Falter in Third Period in Tough Loss to Ice

Red Deer Rebels News Release

WINNIPEG - The Red Deer Rebels were neck and neck with the Canadian Hockey League's top-ranked team after 40 minutes Thursday night.

And then they weren't.

Trailing by a single goal after two periods of a close contest, the Rebels gave up a pair of third-period goals and fell 4-1 to the Winnipeg Ice in a WHL contest viewed by 1,621 fans at the Wayne Fleming Arena.

"It was a frustrating game because we were right there. It was a 2-1 hockey game going into the third period," said Rebels head coach Steve Konowalchuk.

"There's a few details we have to clean up that were the difference in them being able to pull away from us."

Connor McClennon provided the Ice with a 1-0 lead when he connected at 13:02 of the opening period, but Blake Stevenson pulled the visitors even with his sixth of the season 3:35 into the middle frame with the Rebels on the power play, tipping Hunter Mayo's point shot past netminder Daniel Hauser.

Mikey Milne notched a similar goal for the Ice late in the period and Carson Lambos and Chase Bertholet scored third-period goals for the hosts.

Bertholet's goal was the clincher, as he raced down the left wing and scored shortly after serving a minor penalty.

"It's frustrating. We had some guys who played well and a couple guys, key guys, who didn't go as well as we need when you're playing a good team on the road," said Konowalchuk.

"You need everyone playing their best game, no matter who you're playing."

Hauser was picked as the game's third star after turning aside 31 shots. Chase Coward made 30 saves for the Rebels.

The Rebels were zero-for-three on the power play while the Ice were one-for-six with a man advantage.

"Too many penalties. If you're going to give that team that many looks they're going to find the net," said Konowalchuk.

The Rebels are in Brandon Friday to face the Wheat Kings before returning to the Manitoba capital Sunday for an afternoon rematch with the Ice.

"We'll have to be a little better tomorrow," said Konowalchuk.

Notable: The Ice swept the three-star selections, with Lambos and Bertholet picked as the first and second stars . . . The Rebels will be in Moose Jaw Tuesday to face the Warriors, will take on the Regina Pats the following day and will conclude their six-game road trip with a Nov. 12 date with the Prince Albert Raiders . . . Red Deer's next home game is Nov. 19 against the Calgary Hitmen.
