Bridgeport, Conn. - Ben Walter extended his goal-scoring streak to three games, scoring twice in the Sound Tigers' 5-3 defeat to the Hershey Bears. Alexandre Giroux, the league's leading goal scorer tallied two markers for the Bears who also received a goal each from Oskar Osala, Mathieu Perrault and Francois Bouchard. Mike Iggulden had the other goal for the Sound Tigers. Nathan Lawson was in net for the Sound Tigers and suffered his first regulation loss of the season despite making 22 saves. The Sound Tigers record drops to 24-12-2-2 with 52 points, keeping them in second place in the East Division, one point in front of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
Within the first minute of the opening period, the Bears highly touted offense went on the man-advantage. Osala would give Hershey the 1-0 lead about a minute later with his 19th goal of the season with the assists going to Bouchard and Kyle Wilson. Iggulden and the Sound Tigers would answer at the 7:11 mark of the period to tie the score at 1-1. After Kurtis McLean snapped a shot on goal, Iggulden and Trevor Smith were both parked on either sides of the crease. Smith jammed at the loose puck that eventually came to Iggulden, who slid a shot through the legs of Bears' starting goaltender, Daren Machesney for his 17th goal of the season. Walter would give the Sound Tigers their first and only lead of the game while on the power-play with five minutes remaining in the period. Smith and Iggulden both had assists on Walter's ninth goal of the season to put the Sound Tigers out in front, 2-1. Less then a minute later, the Bears would knot the game back up at two on a goal from Perrault, his seventh of the year.
Giroux would give Hershey the one-goal lead at 3-2 with his 30th tally on the year. Sami Lepisto and Chris Bourque had the assists on Giroux's goal, coming on the power-play.
In the third, it was Giroux once again striking for the Bears on the man-advantage at 7:34. Keith Aucoin, the league's leading point scorer, and Perrault had the assists on Giroux's second marker of the game and 31st on the year, giving Hershey a 4-2 lead. Walter would make it a one-goal game a minute later with a power-play tally of his own. Chris Lee had the lone assist on Walter's second tally of the contest to cut the Bears' lead to 4-3. Hershey would regain their two-goal lead at 11:50 of the final frame on Bouchard's 12th goal of the season. Quintin Laing and Sean Collins had the assists on the goal to close out the scoring at 5-3 and give the Bears' their second victory over the Sound Tigers this season.
Machesney finished the game with 36 saves to earn the win. The Sound Tigers were 2-for-9 on the power-play and 4-for-7 on the penalty-kill.
