Toledo Walleye News Release
Toledo, OH - After a big win on Wednesday, the home team looked to hold the momentum into a big weekend series. The Walleye hosted the North Division leading Kalamazoo Wings on Friday night, and battled down-to-the-wire in another thrilling, high-scoring affair at the new Lucas County Arena.
The Walleye started off with a beautifully timed goal. After Toledo brought it into the Wings' zone, Chris Robertson got the puck at the blue line, sent it ahead to Jonathan Hodgman, who banked it across the crease to Mike Hedden, who one-timed the goal for the first score of the contest.
Kalamazoo tied the game just over three minutes later, but the Walleye answered in a special way near the end of the first period. Receiving a pass at the blue line from Malcolm MacMillan, defenseman Justin Suda took a shot that beat goaltender Jeremy Duchesne for his first professional goal; Toledo would take the 2-1 lead to the break.
The Walleye needed to once again break a tie when the Wings answered in the second, and Adam Hobson scored the power play go-ahead tally for his team-leading tenth score. Unfortunately, K-Zoo was not phased by the deficit.
The third period featured nothing but big, game-changing scores. Kalamazoo scored two goals to claim the lead. Matt Jones then Brian McGuirk scored only eight seconds apart for the Wings' first lead of the contest, but left plenty of time for the hosts. Jonathan Carlsson scored on a helper from JC Sawyer to tie the game at four, forcing the overtime.
There were two big stories in overtime for Toledo: goalie Jordan Pearce then later the game winning goal. Pearce evaded a tremendous Kalamazoo attack and made diving stop after diving stop, six to be exact, to extent the game. Soon after another series of shots by the visitors, JC Sawyer gathered the puck and skated to the right boards. He had a step on a defender, crashed the net, tip-toed around the crease to beat the netminder for the game-winner.
