Elmira Jackals News Release

The Elmira Jackals were defeated on Friday night 2-1 by the Charlotte Checkers at the Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, N.C. The Jackals had a second period lead, but two unanswered goals by the Checkers gave Charlotte the victory. Elmira was looking for its first win all-time against Charlotte, coming into the contest with three losses in three games with the Checkers.

The Jackals took a 1-0 lead early in the second period. Defenseman Jean-Francois David moved the puck ahead to forward Yannick Tifu at center ice, and the Jackals came into the offensive zone with a three-on-one advantage. Tifu found winger Chanse Fitzpatrick cutting to the net, who knocked it past Charlotte goaltender Miika Wiikman for his 12th goal of the season. Tifu notched his 10th point as a Jackal on the play, while David picked up his fifth assist on the season and sixth point overall at 1:40 of the period.

The Checkers were relentless, however, peppering Jackals goaltender Michael-Lee Teslak with 43 shots on the game. They tied the game at 8:40 of the second period, when Randy Rowe snapped a shot past Teslak top shelf to even the score 1-1.

In the third period, the Checkers took the lead for good. Andrew Carroll's eighth goal of the season beat Teslak blocker side to give Charlotte the 2-1 advantage at 10:02 of the third period.

Wiikman went down with an injury early in the third period. He made 18 saves on 19 Jackals shots. Ryan Munce in relief stopped the four Jackals shots he saw. Teslak made 41 saves on 43 Checkers bids, taking the loss for the Jackals.

The Jackals fell to 10-7-2-1 and lost the top spot in the American East Division, with the Reading Royals beating the Trenton Devils 5-4 on Friday night. Elmira now trails Reading by a point for first place in the division.

The Jackals travel down south to North Charleston, S.C. to face the South Carolina Stingrays on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.
