Walleye Notes
Into the win column: Toledo went a perfect 2-0-0 this past weekend starting with a dominating performance Friday night in Kalamazoo. Alden Hirschfeld and Tyler Sikura scored goals 18 seconds apart in the first period to give the Walleye an early 2-0 lead and they went on for a 5-2 win. It was goaltender Jake Paterson's show Saturday night in Evansville. The first year goaltender stopped 38 of 39 shots he faced and the Walleye squeaked out a 2-1 win.
Scoring first: In both games this past weekend, the Walleye scored first and went on to win both contests. The Walleye fell behind in the first two games of the season when the opposing team scored first and went 0-1-1. Last year, Toledo scored first 47 times with a record of 40-5-2 when doing so.
Reaching 40: Toledo reached the 40 shot mark Friday night in Kalamazoo for the first time this season as they doubled up on the Wings 40-20 for the game. Last season, the Walleye hit 40 or more shots on goal eleven times.
Hot starts: Alden Hirschfeld leads the Walleye in scoring to start the season with three goals and two assists while forward Marek Tvrdon has posted four points (3G, 1A) in just two games. Both players had strong outings Friday in Kalamazoo as each collected a pair of goals plus one assist.
The week ahead: Toledo heads north of the border for a pair of games against the Brampton Beast. The now division rivals will play a total of 11 times this season. The Walleye swept the season series last year, winning four times in Brampton and outscoring the Beast 21-10. The Beast are off to a 0-4-1 start to the season. Brampton was swept in a pair of games by the North Division leading Wheeling Nailers 5-1 on Saturday in Wheeling and 4-3 Sunday in Brampton.
