Reading Royals News Release

Weekly Notes

Last week, the Royals split a home-and-home series with the Elmira Jackals, defeating the Jackals 5-1 in Elmira on Friday before falling to Elmira on Saturday in the Fifteenth Anniversary Home Opener, 7-2.

Reading's win in Elmira pushed the team's record to 14-1-3 in the last eighteen games played at First Arena in Elmira, New York, since February of 2013.

Over the last three seasons, the Royals have compiled a record of 24-6-3 against the Jackals. Since Elmira's entry into the ECHL in 2007, Reading has played the Jackals 115 times and has compiled a record of 63-41-11 against Elmira.

The 7-2 loss to Elmira at Santander Arena on Saturday dropped the Royals' record to 6-7-0-2 in home openers. Saturday's loss was the most lopsided loss in the fifteen year history of the team in a home opener. (The Royals sustained a 6-2 loss to the Trenton Titans in the home opener in the Kelly Cup Championship season, 2012-13.)

Saturday's game was played in front of a sellout crowd of 7193. That was the thirty-first sellout in the fifteen year history of the team--and the first since March 9, 2013, when the Wheeling Nailers beat Reading, 3-1, before 7,162 at Santander Arena. The Royals have compiled an overall record of 11-14-6 in sellouts.

Saturday's crowd was the largest to watch a hockey game in Reading since October 21, 2006, when 7215 saw the Trenton Titans beat the Royals 5-4 in a shootout. That was the home opener for the Royals in the 2006-07 season, which marked the last time Reading had a sellout on opening night.

This was the fourth sellout in a home opener for Reading. The team record for attendance in a home opener was set in the 2004-05 season, when 7248 watched Reading fall to the Titans, 3-1, on October 23, 2004.

Elmira's 7 goals on Saturday in Reading came on just 21 shots. Over the first four games of the regular season, the Royals have only given up a total of 87 shots against, which averages out to 21.75 shots per game--which leads the league in that category.

On Friday in Elmira, forward Kevin Sunder became just the third player in Royals' team history to record a hattrick in his first game with the team, joining Brian McCullough (3g-1a) (10/11/02) and defenseman Jonathan Zion (3g) (10/17/03).

In Friday's game, Sundher recorded four points (3g-1a) and played to a plus-4. His goals that night included the first and last of the game (which was not an empty netter) and the game winner. Sundher scored his three goals on just four shots in that game. Sundher also recorded an assist on the Royals' first goal in the 7-2 loss to Elmira on Saturday. He has recorded at least one point in each of his first two games with the team.

Forward Robbie Czarnik recorded three assists in Friday's 5-1 win and scored the Royals' first goal on Saturday. He is riding a three game point streak (2g-3a=5pts).

Adam Comrie scored the Royals' fourth goal on Friday in Elmira. That was his twenty-sixth career goal as a Royal in his 69th game with the team. He is two shy of Denny Urban for the all-time team record for career goals by a defenseman. Urban scored twenty-eight goals in 117 games with Reading.

Forward Geoff Walker is riding a four game point streak (0g-4a=4pts), having recorded an assist in each of the Royals' four games played so far. Walker leads the Royals with fifteen shots on goal through four games.

Forward Justin Crandall is riding a three game point streak (1g-3a=4pts)

Forward Joe Rehkamp and defenseman Sam Windle each engaged in their first fight as a pro in Friday's win in Elmira.

Forward Riley Armstrong scored his first goal for the Royals on Saturday. That was Armstrong's twentieth goal in the ECHL in his fifty-first game in the league. Armstrong has 153 career pro goals in 586 games.

Goaltender Martin Ouellette won his second consecutive start for Reading (2-0-0-0) on Friday in Elmira, stopping 20 of the 21 shots he faced. Ouellette, who recorded his second shutout as a pro in his first start of the season--last Sunday in South Carolina, is tied for second in goals against average (0.50) and fourth in the save percentage (.976). He was recalled to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms in the AHL on Saturday.
