Wheeling Nailers Weekly Report

October 26, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release

Last week, the Wheeling Nailers began the divisional portion of their schedule, as they played their first two games against the Brampton Beast, winning both, to improve to 3-1-0 on the young season. With a full week to prepare, the Nailers took the ice on Saturday night for their home opener, treating 5,330 fans to a spectacular show. The night began with a fight between Patrick McGrath and Stefan Fournier, but the story for the remainder of the contest was Wheeling's offense, which lit the lamp five times. Sahir Gill, Derek Army, Connor Leen, Jarrett Burton, and Clark Seymour were the goal scorers, which gave Franky Palazzese plenty of support, as he earned his second straight win with 22 saves in a 5-1 final score. The following afternoon, the Nailers and Beast met again in Brampton, and while the 4-3 score was different, the result was the same, as Wheeling took the two points. Cody Wydo and John McCarron joined Seymour and Army on the scoresheet, as the Nailers never trailed, owning 2-0 and 4-2 leads. Brian Foster backstopped his first win with the Nailers, blocking away 30 Brampton attempts.

Saturday's attendance of 5,330 marked the first time since March 31, 2012 that the Nailers had a crowd eclipse 5,000, which also gave them the 15th highest attendance at a 2015-16 home opener in the ECHL. Wheeling has had tremendous success in its first home tilt of the season, as Saturday's win was the fifth consecutive triumph in a home opener, running the team's all-time record to 18-5-1. Two of the goals on Saturday came shorthanded, including the first tally of the season at WesBanco Arena by Sahir Gill at 17:53 of the first period. Clark Seymour found the back of the net in both weekend contests, after scoring just one goal all of last season. Derek Army had 1-2-3 totals in each of the two games, giving him career totals of six goals, seven assists, and 13 points in six games against Brampton. Franky Palazzese has allowed only one goal in two starts this season, and had a season-opening shutout streak of 95:06. Mickael Beauregard recorded his first professional point with an assist on Jarrett Burton's goal on Saturday, while John McCarron dented the twine for his first professional goal on Sunday. Burton has had at least one point in all four games thus far this season. Wheeling's power play is clicking at a 26.3% clip (5-for-19) in its last three games, while its penalty kill was 12-for-13 (92.3%) against the Beast.

This Week

Fri. 10/30 Adirondack Thunder @ WHEELING NAILERS, 7:35

Sat. 10/31 Quad City Mallards @ WHEELING NAILERS, 7:35

This week, the Wheeling Nailers will see a pair of opponents for the first times ever, and in both cases, the visitors will be making their lone trips of the season to WesBanco Arena. On Friday night, Wheeling clashes with the Adirondack Thunder, who is one of four ECHL clubs without a loss (CIN, FW, ORL), as it enters the week with a 4-0-0 record. Adirondack has beaten Elmira, Brampton, and Manchester (2X), with three of those four games taking place on the road. Veteran Rob Bordson leads the Thunder with eight points, while Louick Marcotte tops the club with five goals. On Saturday, the Quad City Mallards pay their first visit to Wheeling, entering the week with a 3-1-1 mark, which places them second in the Midwest Division. Last weekend, Quad City won two of three games, defeating the Tulsa Oilers and Wichita Thunder, after falling to the Oilers on Friday night. Logan Nelson is the leading scorer for the Mallards, with four goals and five points. Both teams will take the ice earlier in the week, with Adirondack hosting Orlando on Wednesday, and Quad City visiting Missouri on Tuesday and Norfolk on Friday.
