Walks Haunt Chiefs in 4-2 Sunday Setback

Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs fell to the Bowling Green Hot Rods in the second game of the series 4-2 Sunday afternoon at Peoria Chiefs Stadium. The loss puts Peoria at 9-14 in the second half and 44-48 on the year.

Bowling Green was first to score for the second game in a row. With the first pitch of the game, Zach Cates hit Jake Hager with a pitch and with Juniel Querecuto at the plate, Hager stole second. Querecuto moved Hager to third with a ground ball to the right side of the infield. Cameron Seitzer got the Hot Rods on the board with a base hit to center field, giving them a 1-0 lead. Cates plunked Todd Glaesmann on an 0-1 pitch and Jeff Malm reached first on a fielders choice putting Seitzer on third. With two outs, Cates threw a wild pitch and Seitzer scored making the score 2-0.

The Chiefs cut into the lead in the bottom of fourth. Felipe Rivero came in to relieve Roberto Gomez and Paul Hoilman and Javier Baez greeted Rivero with back-to-back base hits putting runners on the corners. Wes Darvill lifted a fly ball into center field on an 0-1 pitch and Hoilman was able to race home and beat the throw from Glaesmann and make the score 2-1.

The Hot Rods extended their lead in the top of the sixth against reliever Jeff Antigua. Josh Sale led off with a walk and was caught in a run down between first and second on a pickoff attempt by Antigua but Hoilman was unable to get a clean throw off to second and Sale returned safely to first. Taylor Motter had a bunt base hit and both he and Sale moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Tyler Goeddel. On a 1-1 Antigua offering, Hager lined a ball into center field to score two and push the lead to 4-1.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Chiefs had a rally going with two outs. After Charlie Cononie retired the first two batters he faced, he walked Pin-Chieh Chen, DeVoss and Taiwan Easterling to load the bases for Dustin Geiger. Geiger went down on three pitches to end the inning with Peoria trailing 4-1.

Peoria put up a rally in the bottom of the ninth but were unable to complete the come back. Oliver Zapata led off with a bunt base hit and went to second on a Sergio Burruel ground out. Chen singled to left field and Zapata scored easily and Chen moved to second on a Sale error. Cononie threw a ball to the backstop and Chen moved to third with only one out. DeVoss walked and stole second to put the tying run in scoring position. Easterling and Geiger both had chances to knot the game but each struck out and the final score was 4-2.

Cates (0-2) went 4 2/3 innings and gave up four hits and walked four while striking out one. Both runs he surrendered scored in the first and Antigua was able to strand the two runners he was responsible for when he exited the ball game. Antigua finished the afternoon with 2 1/3 innings pitched allowing four hits and two runs, only one earned. He struck out one and walked three. Larry Suarez threw the last two innings of the game with ease. He faced six hitters and did not allow a base runner and he struck out two.

Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Javier Baez (SS) - Baez was able to extend his hitting streak to 11 games as he collected three hits in Sunday's contest. He had three hits in the game and he fell a homer shy of the cycle after falling a double short Saturday night. He raised his average to .331 on the season and he is 19-for-38 (.500) during the streak.

Notes: The triple by Baez in the second was his second lead off triple in as many days and it gave him an 11-game hitting streak...During Baez's hit streak, he has had three games with three hits...Baez fell one hit short of the cycle for the second straight day...Darvill has at least an RBI in his last five games played...Darvill had his seven-game hitting streak snapped...DeVoss has reached base in the past 10 games via hit or walk...After being caught stealing in the bottom of the fifth, DeVoss is now tied for the Midwest League lead with 10 and his two stolen bases Sunday give him 24 on the season...The 4 2/3 innings by Cates is tied for his most innings pitched since joining the Chiefs...Four walks for Cates is the most he has had since joining Peoria...In the second half, the Chiefs are 1-4 in day games since losing four in a row...The series with Bowling Green concludes tomorrow morning at 11 a.m...Monday means half-price tickets for fans...The game tomorrow is a Chiefs' July Tradition, Super Splash Day, as we cool fans off with super soakers, water balloons, kiddie pools and much more...The Chiefs send RH Starling Peralta (2-4, 3.14) to the bump and the Hot Rods counter with RH Trevor Shull (2-4, 5.29)...The broadcast can be heard, starting with the pre-game show at 10:45 a.m. on www.peoriachiefs.com/listenlive which also has downloads for a free app on the iPhone, iPad, Blackberry and Android.
