Lansing Tops Kernels, 6-2

LANSING, Mich. - The Lansing Lugnuts downed the Kernels 6-2 on Sunday afternoon at Cooley Law School Stadium to take the first two of the three game series. The Kernels scored first in the 3rd inning as Alex Yarbrough's RBI single plated Drew Martinez and gave Cedar Rapids a 1-0 lead.

Lansing put up three runs in the 4th inning, taking a lead they wouldn't relinquish. K.C. Hobson dribbled a ball a few feet in front of home plate to score Michael Crouse with a RBI infield single, tying the game 1-1. Two batters later, the Lugnuts took a 2-1 lead when Hobson scored on Gustavo Pierre's first of two RBI triples on the day. Pierre came home to score on a RBI single from Chris Peters, making the score 3-1.

The Kernels tallied a run in the 6th inning, cutting the Lansing lead to 3-2. Eric Stamets led off with a single and eventually scored on Andy Workman's RBI sacrifice fly to right field. Lansing pushed the cushion back to two runs with a run in the bottom of the 6th inning. Gustavo Pierre's RBI single plated Michael Crouse, who had led off the frame with a walk. This gave the Lugnuts a 4-2 advantage.

The home team added two unneeded insurance runs in the 8th inning, extending the lead to 6-2. Kevin Patterson's RBI fielder's choice brought Michael Choice home. Then, Gustavo Pierre's second RBI triple of the afternoon scored Patterson to put Lansing up by four runs.

Aaron Meade (2-1) started for Cedar Rapids and took the loss, going five innings. He allowed three runs on five hits while recording four strikeouts. Carmine Giardina allowed one run over two innings of relief work. Logan Odom went one inning and allowed two runs.

Anthony DeSclafani (7-3) went six innings for the Lansing victory, allowing two runs on seven hits. Brandon Berl's two scoreless innings gave him a hold. Then, closer Ajay Meyer pitched a 1-2-3 9th inning in a non-save situation.

The Kernels conclude the series at Lansing on Monday evening at 6:05 p.m. (7:05 p.m. eastern). The team returns home on July 18 vs. Ft. Wayne.
