Cougars Fall as Whitecaps Even Series

GENEVA, Ill.-Four innings of hitless relief helped the West Michigan Whitecaps hang on to a 6-3 victory as they defeated the Kane County Cougars on Sunday evening at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

West Michigan (48-45, 12-11) grabbed the lead with three runs in the top of the second off starter Kyle Smith (0-1). Aaron Westlake started the frame with a single and scored on a two-bagger from Jason Krizan. Krizan crossed the dish after a two-out single off the bat of Edgar Corcino while Chad Wrighty also picked up an RBI knock to complete the three-run inning.

Zach Maggard lifted the Whitecaps to a 5-1 cushion as he belted a two-run homer to right-center against Smith in the fourth inning. Kane County (47-46, 13-10) did lead initially as Michael Antonio drove home Danny Mateo with a single in the first. Alex Llanos singled with the bases loaded in the fourth inning to pull the Cougars within three while Danny Mateo ripped a solo homer to right in the fifth.

Nick Avila, Michael Torrealba and Dan Bennett (S, 11) shut down the Cougars from there as the home team was held hitless in the final four frames. Tommy Collier (8-6) started and labored through five innings while surrendering six hits. Jonathan Dooley and Rudy Brown combined for three scoreless innings out of the Cougars' bullpen while Andrew Triggs coughed up a run in the ninth.
