Bees Top Dragons 3-2 in 10 Innings

Burlington, Iowa-Aaron Shipman's double brought in pinch runner Bobby Crocker from first base with the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Burlington Bees topped the Dayton Dragons 3-2 on Sunday afternoon. The Dragons fell to 9-14 in the second half with the loss. They are 2-3 on their current six-game road trip that concludes Monday.

With one out in the bottom of the 10th inning, Burlington's Nick Rickles reached on an error by Dragons shortstop Juan Perez. Crocker entered the game to run for Rickles. After Royce Consigli lined out to left field for the second out, Shipman hit a line drive to right field. Dragons outfielder Yorman Rodriguez hesitated before going back, and the ball got over his glove and bounced against the fence. Rodriguez played the ball off the wall quickly as Crocker rounded second and headed for third, but Rodriguez's relay throw rolled all the way to the infield, where it was picked up by Dragons first baseman Sean Buckley as Crocker came around third. Buckley's throw to the plate was late as Crocker scored to end the game.

The Dragons dramatically tied the game in the top of the ninth inning and nearly took the lead in the 10th. Trailing 2-1 with one out and the bases empty in the ninth, Dayton's Nick O'Shea lined a home run to left field to pull the Dragons even at 1-1.

In the top of the 10th, Rodriguez singled with one out and went to third on Buckley's hit. But Ryan Wright struck out swinging and Kyle Waldrop popped out foul to the catcher to strand the tie-breaking runner at third.

The Dragons scored an unearned run in the second on a wild pick-off throw to take the lead. Burlington scored twice in the third, collecting the only three hits they would get prior to the ninth inning, as they took a 2-1 lead that help up until O'Shea's homer.

Dayton starting pitcher Wes Mugarian worked five innings and allowed three hits and two runs while walking two and striking out five. Dan Jensen was sensational in relief of Mugarian, retiring all nine batters he faced with a ball leaving the infield. He struck out three. Ryan Kemp (1-2) worked a scoreless ninth inning before allowing the unearned run in the 10th to end the game.

The Dragons collected nine hits. Rodriguez and O'Shea each had two.

The Dragons (9-14) close out a six-game road trip on Monday night in Burlington against the Bees (12-11) at 7:30 p.m. (EDT) (WONE 980 AM). Radhames Quezada (5-7, 3.50) will start for the Dragons against Burlington's A.J. Cole (4-2, 2.36). The next home game is Wednesday when the Dragons host Clinton at Fifth Third Field.
