LANSING, Mich. - The Lansing Lugnuts (13-9, 60-31) posted 13 hits in a surreal rain-shortened 9-4 victory over the Cedar Rapids Kernels (8-14, 40-52) on a Saturday night at Cooley Law School Stadium that featured rain delays in the second, third and ninth innings.

The Kernels scored three runs in the rain-shortened ninth off of Aleson Escalante. Matt Scioscia made it a 9-4 game when he mashed a two-out, RBI double. Immediately after the play concluded, the skies broke open in a sudden, torrential downpour and the game was called after a 30 minute delay.

The game lasted two hours and 38 minutes. The three delays combined to last three hours and two minutes.

The Lugnuts jumped on the board early against Kernels starter Austin Wood (Loss, 5-8) whose 2 1/3 inning outing was cut short by the rain.

Kenny Wilson (0-for-3, two runs, two stolen bases, RBI) scored on a fielder's interference in the first inning. K.C. Hobson (2-for-4, four RBI) then delivered an RBI single in the first before adding a three-run homer in a four-run fourth inning.

Andy Fermin (3-for-5, two runs, two RBI) added an RBI triple in the fifth inning.

Gustavo Pierre (3-for-4, run, RBI) tacked on an RBI single in the seventh inning.

Kevin Patterson walked twice, recorded two singles and was retired just once in five plate appearances.

Lugnuts starter Noah Syndergaard tossed three perfect innings and struck out four but his outing was cut short by the second rain delay.

The Kernels' first base runner came with one out in the fifth inning against reliever Phil Brua (Win, 1-0). The sidearm worked three innings, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out two and walking a pair.

The second game of the three-game series is on a Bark in the Park Sunday, July 15th at 2:05 p.m., with families invited to bring their dogs to the ballpark. The Lugs will send righty Anthony DeSclafani (6-3, 3.28) to the mound against the Kernels lefty Aaron Meade (2-0, 2.43).

It is also a Kids Day, with families encouraged to play catch on the field before the game and Kids Run the Bases after the game. Tickets are available for purchase online at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500.
