Captains Win Third Straight Game

Lake County Captains News Release


(Eastlake, OH) - The Lake County Captains (12-11, 43-49) used an RBI single by Jordan Smith in the seventh inning to defeat the Beloit Snappers (10-13, 49-44) by a final of 8-5. With two outs, Jose Ramirez was on second base and Jordan Smith hit a ground ball single to right field which scored Ramirez and put the Captains up for good 8-5. That was the final score. The Captains have won three straight games the longest win streak of the second half.

Lake County scored four times in the bottom of the second inning. Lake County used four hits in the inning including a two run homerun by Todd Hankins. In the inning the Captains saw Luigi Rodriguez double, and got base hits from Bryson Myles and Alex Lavisky. Lake County led the game 4-0 heading to the top of the third.

In the top of the third inning, Beloit scored two runs to half the lead. JD Williams doubled with one out and moved to second on a wild pitch. Tyler Grimes lifted a sacrifice fly to center field and Williams scored. On the play Luigi Rodriguez in Center Field dropped the ball so Grimes reached second base. Grimes came around to score on a single by Steven Wickens and it was a 4-2 Captains lead.

In the bottom of the third inning, Lake County scored three runs and took a 7-2 lead. Francisco Lindor hit his first homerun of the season from the right side of the plate and his fifth of the season to lead off the inning. It was Lindor's first homerun since May 14th. Later in the inning Luigi Rodriguez hit a two run homer, his seventh of the season, and the Captains lead went to five runs.

The lead was cut back down to two runs after the top of the fourth inning. With two on, Jhon Goncalves hit a double to left field, which scored a run, and moved another runner to third. Matt Koch then singled home that runner and moved Goncalves to third base. Goncalves scored on a wild pitch to cap the three run inning and the score was 7-5 Captains headed to the fifth inning.

LHP Elvis Araujo (4-7) started the game for the Captains and earned the win. Araujo pitched five innings, allowing five hits, five runs, and four were earned. He allowed one walk, and fanned seven. Araujo started the game on his 21st birthday. Felix Sterling pitched the final four innings, and allowed just one hit and one walk. Sterling struck out two and hit one batter. Felix earned his first career save.

LHP Ryan O'Rourke (2-5) got the start for Beloit O'Rourke took the loss after twirling just two and one thirds innings, allowing seven hits, seven earned runs with two strikeouts and surrendering three homers. The Snapper's bullpen combined to pitch five and two thirds innings allowing six hits, one earned run, they walked three and struck out five.

The Beloit Snappers will send RHP Tyler Jones (1-3, 3.28) to the mound to start the ballgame against the Captains. Lake County will counter with RHP Cody Anderson (4-5, 3.33). Game Time is 7:00 PM
