Peoria Chiefs News Release

Peoria, IL - Peoria Chiefs Stadium was treated with extra-innings Saturday evening as the Peoria Chiefs defeated the Bowling Green Hot Rods 9-8 with a walk-off win in the 10th inning. The win puts the Chiefs at 9-13 in the second half and 44-47 overall, as they look to make it three in-a-row Sunday afternoon with first pitch at 2:00.

After leaving runners on first and second in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extras, the Chiefs caught a break an inning later. Yasiel Balaguert pulled a ground ball that skipped past Tyler Goeddel into left-field allowing him to pull into second on the error. Oliver Zapata was brought into the ballgame to pinch-run for Balaguert representing the winning run. After Pin-Chieh Chen was unable to lay down the sacrifice bunt, a wild pitch by Justin Woodall moved Zapata to third. With the winning run 90 feet away and one out, the Hot Rods opted to intentionally walk Zeke DeVoss to set up the double play. That would be all for Justin Woodall as Austin Hubbard came on looking to send the game to the 11th. With the infield in, DeVoss moved to second on defensive indifference before Taiwan Easterling popped out to shallow left field. With two outs, Chadd Krist was given the opportunity to be the hero. In just his third game as a Chief, the 2012 draftee did just that as he laced a single off the glove of Goeddel allowing Zapata to score easily, for a 9-8 walk-off victory

The Hot Rods wasted no time getting on the board in the top of the first against Michael Jensen. After a strikeout to start the frame, Jake Hager singled to right. An out later, Todd Glaesmann made it 2-0 with a two-run homerun to left.

The Chiefs responded in the bottom of the first. DeVoss led off with a walk and after advancing to second on a balk by Parker Markel, Easterling put runners on the corners with an infield single. With Kirst at the plate, Easterling took off from first on a delayed steal and was thrown out at second, allowing DeVoss to scamper home to put Peoria on the board, 2-1.

Bowling Green got the run back in the top of the second. Keith Castillo led off with a walk and an out later was moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt by Goeddel. A wild pitch moved Castillo to third, and Ryan Brett walked to put runners on the corners. Jake Hager reached on an infield single to third scoring Castillo to make it 3-1.

The Chiefs pulled within a run in the bottom of the fourth. Paul Hoilman led off with a deep fly ball to center field that Todd Glaesmann leaped for at the wall, reaching above the top of the wall and knocking it onto the warning track for a triple. The ball appeared to be a home run and Chiefs Manager Casey Kopitzke disputed the call with both umpires, but to no avail as the call remained a triple. Hoilman scored three pitches later as Javier Baez reached on a fielding error by first baseman Cameron Seitzer to cut the lead to 3-2.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Chiefs jumped out on top. Yasiel Balaguert got the inning started with a lead-off single to right. An out later, DeVoss doubled down the right field line putting two in scoring position for Easterling. The two-hitter smacked a double to left-center field plating both runners and giving Peoria a 4-3 lead. Krist singled to put runners on the corners before Hoilman stuckout for the second out of the inning. That set the stage for Baez, who didn't disappoint launching a 1-2 offering from Markel into the left-field berm for a three-run homerun, extending Peoria's lead to 7-3.

The Hot Rods came storming back in the top of the sixth. Seitzer and Matt Rice strung together back-to-back one-out singles to put runners on the corners. Rice stole second before Castillo walked to load the bases. That was all for Jensen, as Sheldon McDonald was summoned from the bullpen to try and escape the jam. Taylor Motter grounded to third scoring Seitzer to cut the lead to 7-4. With Goeddel batting, a wild pitch scored Rice and moved Castillo to third. Goeddel singled home Castillo cutting the Chiefs' lead to one. After Goeddel stole second, McDonald bounced back to strike out Ryan Brett to end the inning, and keep the Chiefs lead at 7-6.

Bowling Green continued their comeback an inning later, taking the lead in the top of the seventh. Hager led off with a single before Vettleson reached on an error by Hoilman at first. Glaesmann followed with a single over the head of Hoilman scoring Hager and knotting the game at 7-7. McDonald got Seitzer to ground in to a double-play, but not before Vettleson crossed home giving Dayton an 8-7 advantage.

The Chiefs responded once again in the bottom of the seventh. Krist led off with a single before Hoilman walked to join him on the base paths. Baez loaded the bases with an infield single before Wes Darvill earned himself an RBI with a walk, tying the score at 8-8. Yaniel Cabezas followed with a high fly ball to left, not deep enough though for Hoilman to score as he was thrown out by Motter at the plate. With both runners advancing on the play at the plate, Balaguert was unable to take advantage as he lined out softly to shallow center to end the inning.

Jensen tossed 5 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on six hits and a season-high four walks while striking out three in the no decision. McDonald entered in the sixth, going 1 2/3 innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and a walk, while striking out a pair. Austin Reed came in out of the bullpen in the eighth, tossing two shutout innings with one walk and three strikeouts. Yao Lin-Wang (2-2) earned the win with one scoreless inning in the tenth, allowing one hit and striking out one.

Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Javier Baez (SS) - The 2011 first-round draft pick put on a show Saturday evening in helping the Chiefs grab a victory over the Hot Rods. Baez extended his hit-streak to 10 games going 3-for-5 with with a triple, RBI groundout, and a three-run homerun. During the streak, Baez is 16-for-34 (.471) with four homeruns and eight RBI.
