Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings played the Phoenix Roadrunners in the final game of a 10 day road trip tonight, and lost to the Roadrunners 3-1.
Phoenix Forward Miguel Lafleche joined the team after being activated from the injured reserve today, and he added some offense in the first period. At 14:23 Lafleche put the puck on net, and it beat Salmon Kings Goaltender BJ Boxma, who made his third start of the trip, and second at the America West Arena.
Phoenix opened a two goal lead at 4:09 of the second period. Forward Dean Tiltgen increased his point total to 13, notching his sixth goal of the season, unassisted.
Victoria had only seven forwards available to start the game, and in the second period the group played tough in the Roadrunners zone, and out-shot them 10-6. Just 1:02 after Tiltgen's marker, the Salmon Kings had Phoenix on their heels, and forced a face-off to the left of Goaltender Mike Mole. Forward Dustan Heintz got a point in his fifth straight game, when he won the draw back to Nate Forster on the blueline. Forster lobbed the shot at Mole and it handcuffed the goalie to cut the Roadrunners lead in half.
The Roadrunners opened the third on the powerplay and Forward Peter Trovado iced the game, when he picked up a rebound in front and beat Boxma from a tight angle, 44 seconds into the period.
Victoria played with discipline throughout the game, giving the Roadrunners only two man advantages. Victoria's powerplay unit was 0-4, while Phoenix finished 1-2. The Roadrunners out-shot the Salmon Kings 33-23 before 3014 in attendance.
The Victoria Salmon Kings return home to play to the Utah Grizzlies for a three game series starting on Friday December 2nd. The Stanley Cup will be at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre as it makes a brief stop in Victoria on its Red Cross Hurricane Relief Tour. The series will continue on Saturday evening, followed by a Sunday matinee which will feature the Salmon Kings first ever Teddy Bear Toss, and the KidSport Post-Game Skate with the Salmon Kings.
