San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Gulls have announced that goaltender Tom Lawson has been named the Jewelry Designs by Stuart Benjamin & Company and Kristy's MVP Player of the Month for November. Lawson will be presented the award in a pre-game ceremony before Saturday's game against the Johnstown Chiefs.
Lawson posted a 5-1-1 record with a 2.36 goals-against average and .923 save percentage in November. He also recorded his first shutout this season (14th career) in a 7-0 victory over the Bakersfield Condors on Nov. 18.
The Colorado Avalanche, San Diego's NHL affiliate, originally assigned Lawson to the Gulls in early October. The 6-foot-5-inch, 200-pound native of Whitby, Ontario spent portions of training camp with both Colorado and the American Hockey League's Lowell Lock Monsters.
Lawson played the last two seasons with the AHL's Hershey Bears, posting a combined 23-26-2 record with a 2.55 GAA, .923 save percentage and six shutouts. He recorded two consecutive shutouts last season and was named Hershey's Rookie of the Year in 2003-04.
The 26-year-old netminder was named the United Hockey League's Best Goaltender, Playoff MVP and First-Team All-Star in 2002-03 after leading the Fort Wayne Komets to the Colonial Cup Championship. Lawson led the UHL with a 2.00 GAA and seven shutouts in 2002-03, while posting an 11-1 record and 1.68 GAA in the playoffs.
The Gulls continue their longest homestand of the year with two games this weekend against the Johnstown Chiefs. Saturday's game, which starts at 7:05 p.m., is "Survive the Holidays" night and Gulls hiking water bottles will be given away. Sunday's contest against Johnstown begins at 5:05 p.m. and will be another Kids Night, featuring "Skate with the Gulls" immediately afterward. San Diego closes out the homestand Friday, Dec. 9 vs. Phoenix.
