ValleyCats Hold Renegades to One Hit in 6-0 Victory

Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

TROY, NY - The Tri-City ValleyCats held the Hudson Valley Renegades to one hit and used a late-game offensive surge that included home runs by Mott Hyde and Terrell Joyce en route to a 6-2 victory in front of 4,850 fans at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium on Thursday night.

In a battle between the top two offenses in the New York-Penn League, it was the ValleyCats' pitching that stole the show early on. Right-hander Francis Ramirez started the game for Tri-City by striking out five Renegade batters in four innings, with the only blemish on his night coming in the form of a hit batter.

Ramirez was followed by left-hander Randall Fant, who struck out four batters, and did not allow a hit until Hudson Valley first baseman Casey Gillaspie led off the top of the seventh with a single.

After Gillaspie's base hit squashed the 'Cats attempt at a no-hitter, Fant proceeded to retire the next three batters (two via strikeout) to send the game into the bottom of the seventh. Tri-City second baseman Alex Hernandez led off that frame with a single to center field. After Ariel Ovando advanced Hernandez to second with a sacrifice bunt, Alfredo Gonzalez drove him home with a single to right field, giving the ValleyCats a 1-0 lead.

After Gonzalez was caught stealing, Hyde drilled a 3-1 pitch from Hudson Valley reliever Trevor Dunlap over the left field wall for his second home run of the season.

After Fant pitched a scoreless top of the eighth, the ValleyCats put four runs on the board in the bottom half of the frame. The big blow was a Terrell Joyce three-run home run off Renegades right-hander Mike Franco to increase Tri-City's lead to 6-0.

The home run by Joyce was his 10th this season, and his sixth long ball since the calendar turned to August. In 13 games this month, the Newport News, Va., native has 19 RBIs and 16 hits in 45 at-bats, good for a .356 batting average over that span.

Right-handed reliever Derick Velazquez worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to shut the door on the Renegades. With the victory, the ValleyCats finish the season series against Hudson Valley with a record of 4-2. Their overall record of 40-20 is tied with the Renegades for the top record in the entire New York-Penn League.

The ValleyCats will now head to Staten Island to take on the Yankees in a three-game set. RHP Austin Chrismon (5-2, 2.83) will be on the mound for Tri-City, with LHP Jordan Montgomery (0-0, 1.17) getting the start for the Yankees.

Following the series in Staten Island, the ValleyCats will have a day off on Monday before Tuesday's New York-Penn League All-Star Game in Brooklyn. Tri-City will then return home on Aug. 20th to begin a two-game series against the Vermont Lake Monsters.
