Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
Troy, NY (8/13/14)- The Hudson Valley Renegades scored two runs in three separate innings on Wednesday evening, defeating the Tri-City ValleyCats 6-2. The victory makes them the first team to reach 40 wins this season, as they now improve to 40-19 overall. The win also snaps a three-game losing streak and brings their road record 18-13 in 2014. The Renegades now have a nine game advantage over the Brooklyn Cyclones in first place of the McNamara Division. They complete their final game against the ValleyCats on Thursday, and put an end to a six-game stretch against their Stedler Division rival, marking their final meeting of the regular season.
Hunter Wood answered the call on the mound with an impressive five innings of one-run baseball in his 11 th start with the Renegades. The All-Star selection improves to 3-3 with a 2.91 ERA after a six-strikeout performance. He follows up Chris Pike's six strikeouts in his start the day before, and now leads the team with a total of 51 this summer.
A combination of two relief pitchers were able to handle the rest of the pitching duties, as Edgar Gomez and Kyle McKenzie combined for the next four innings. Each of them went two innings on the evening, with Gomez giving up one run and striking out three, and McKenzie allowing no runs with one strikeout.
The Hudson Valley bats came alive in their fifth meeting with Tri-City, scoring six runs on seven hits. Casey Gillaspie and Hunter Lockwood led the offensive onslaught, combining for three hits and five RBI's. Lockwood drove in two runs in the top of the first inning, lining a single up the middle to give the Renegades a 2-0 lead. He'd go on to drive in another run in the top of the fifth, beating out a routine groundball to shortstop for his third run batted in of the night. Gillaspie delivered the knockout punch, homering to right-field with Coty Blanchard on base to give his team a 6-2 lead in the top of the seventh.
Neither squad would score again after that point.
Braxton Lee and Hunter Lockwood were the only Renegades' with multiple hits in the game, with Lee going 2-5 with two runs scored. He has become a topnotch producer out of the leadoff spot, and now has his batting average at .301, with a .350 clip over his last ten games.
Notes: Both Alec Sole and Coty Blanchard carried nine game hitting streaks with them into tonight's contest, and both expanded their streak to ten games with a base-hit in the game. Hunter Lockwood increased his league-leading RBI total to four over the next highest player, as now has 42 this season.
Hudson Valley will play two more road games against the Tri-City ValleyCats before returning home for 'Be Your Own Fan Friday' at The Dutch. Fans get to watch their ideas come to life. They'll have the opportunity to choose everything form the music, to in-between inning contests. Post-game fireworks presented by ServPro. First pitch is at 7:05 PM. Great seats are still available!
