Brooklyn Cyclones News Release
Brooklyn, NY -- With another strong start from Corey Oswalt and a homerun from Jhoan Ureña, the Cyclones unwound the Spinners in Thursday night's rubber match of a three game series, beating Lowell 5-1.
The Cyclones jumped on the board early, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Leadoff batter, John Mora, was hit by a pitch, by Spinners starting pitcher, Jeffry Fernandez. Amed Rosario then hit a chopper to short and got out at first, but Mora advanced to second base safely. Michael Conforto and Ureña each drew a walk to load the bases for Tomas Nido. Nido lined a base hit down the left field line, driving in two runs. However, Nido got caught in a run down between first and second and Ureña was tagged out at the plate to end the inning, as he tried to take advantage of the run down and head home.
Corey Oswalt, who was recently named a NYPL All-Star, took the mound for Brooklyn and had his only hiccup of the game in the top of the fifth inning, when Lowell scored their first and only run of the night. Alixon Suarez hit a ground ball to Jhoan Ureña at third, but was able to reach second base on a throwing error by Ureña. Raymel Flores hit a single to put runners on the corners for Lowell. The Cyclones were only able to get one out on a ground ball to shortstop Amed Rosario from Mauricio Dubon and the runner on third scored to make it a 2-1 ballgame. With the next batter up, Dubon was caught stealing second, as Tomas Nido gunned him down from behind the plate.
Small ball in the bottom of the fifth allowed the Cyclones to add a run to their lead. Adrian Abreu led off with a walk and took second base on an overthrown pick-off attempt from Fernandez. Tucker Tharp grounded out to second, but advanced Abreu to third base. Jeffry Fernandez balked to allow Abreu to score the Cyclones third run of the night.
Brooklyn's lead was extended in the sixth, thanks to a long shot from Jhoan Ureña. Michael Conforto got on base with a single to right field. Jhoan Ureña then lined a two run homerun over the left field wall. With that hit, Ureña extended his streak to 10 games and now has three double digit hit streaks on the season. He is the only player in franchise history to have three double digit hit streaks in one season.
Corey Oswalt made another strong start for the Cyclones and earned his sixth win of the season. Oswalt pitched 6.0 innings, with only one unearned run being scored on him. Brad Wieck entered the game in the top of the seventh to take over for Oswalt on the mound. Wieck was able to hold the Spinners scoreless through the eighth inning, before the Cyclones turned Gaither Bumgardner to finish the game. Bumgardner retired the side to secure Brooklyn's 5-1 victory.
The Cyclones will leave for Vermont to play a three game series against the Lake Monsters and will return home next week to face the Staten Island Yankees. Until then MCU Park will be hosting the 2014 New York-Penn League All-Star on August 19th. Tickets to the All-Star Game are still available.
