Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release

Staten Island, NY- In game one, the Staten Island Yankees (28-29) defeated the Connecticut Tigers (31-27) by the score of 5-2 at Richmond County Bank Ballpark Wednesday night. RF Austin Aune (1-2) led the way for the Yankees as he put the team up 2-0 in the first inning with an two-run double.

RHP Fernando Perez (4-4) suffered his fourth loss of the season and his second straight. It was Perez's shortest outing of the season as he only pitched two innings while allowing three runs on two hits. Of the six outs recorded by Perez, four of them were for strikeouts. One of the big blows to Perez's shortest outing was that he walked three of the first four batters. RHP Jack Fischer pitched three innings while giving up two runs on four hits.

The Tigers bats just could not get anything going. The one through three hitters were a combine 0-for-11 at the plate. 3B Steven Fuentes (2-3) continued to swing the bat well as he hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning that cut the game to three runs at 5-2. Fuentes was the only Tiger to have a multiple hit game.

In game two, the Yankees (29-29) defeated the Tigers (31-28) by the score of 3-2. With the scored tied, the Yankees grabbed two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 3-1 lead. 3B Renzo Martini (1-2) put the Yankees in front 2-1 with an RBI single. 2B Ty McFarland reached first base on a throwing error by Tigers SS Garrett Mattlage (0-3) which allowed Martini to score the third run of the game for Staten Island.

The Tigers offense for the second straight game gave little run support for their pitching staff. DH Joey Pankake (1-3) put the Tigers in front in the first inning with an RBI single. C Tim Remes (1-2) kept Connecticut in the game with an opposite field solo home run in the seventh inning that cut the lead to one run at 3-2. The Tigers were 1-for-9 in the game with runners in scoring position and left seven on base. In the doubleheader, the Tigers were 3-for-14 with runners in scoring position and left 13 on base.

RHP Austin Pritcher (6-2) suffered just his second loss of the season. Pritcher pitched three innings while giving up two runs on four hits and struck out five batters. Pritcher relieved RHP Josh Heddinger who made the start. Heddinger pitched two innings while giving up one run on two hits. The Tigers defense made key defensive mistakes that led to two unearned runs that were charged to Heddinger and Pritcher. The defense committed three errors and four total in the doubleheader.

In the series finale, Tigers RHP AJ Ladwig (0-2, 2.25) is slated to face RHP Jonathan Holder (1-1, 3.27). The pre-game show begins at 6:50 on AM 1310 WICH and cttigers.com.
