State College Spikes News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA - Nick Thompson smashed his fifth home run of the season to help jumpstart a six-run third inning for the State College Spikes to drive an 8-2 win over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on Thursday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park in front of 5,020 fans.
With the win, the Spikes (35-25) extended their lead in the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division to seven games over Batavia and Jamestown. State College also lowered its magic number to clinch a second consecutive division title to 10.
Thompson's two-run shot to center field gave the Spikes a 3-0 lead in the third, and State College took advantage of Mahoning Valley mistakes to score four more runs with two outs. Robelys Reyes reached base on a third strike passed ball that would have ended the frame, and Brian O'Keefe joined Jhohan Acevedo in providing back-to-back RBI singles. Brett Wiley then capped the frame with a bases-loaded, two-run single to make it 7-0, State College.
Alex De Leon started the Spikes' scoring with a first-inning sacrifice fly that gave him four runs batted in over the last two games. Thompson then added his third RBI of the contest with a fifth-inning single. Wiley, Danny Diekroeger and Kenny Peoples-Walls all delivered multiple hits for the Spikes, who collected 13 hits as a team.
Austin Gomber started for State College, allowing three hits and four walks but stranding six runners over three scoreless innings. Joe Scanio (1-1) then picked up the win with three innings of relief in which he allowed one run on three hits and a walk.
Mahoning Valley (25-34) got on the board with Greg Allen's infield single to score a run in the sixth, and then plated a run in the ninth on Leo Castillo's single. The Scrappers left a total of 12 runners on base during the game. Ordomar Valdez produced a pair of doubles for Mahoning Valley as well.
Right-hander Juan Santana (0-7) took the loss for the Scrappers after giving up seven runs, four of them earned, on eight hits, a walk and a hit batsman. Santana struck out one in his shortest outing of the season.
The crowd of 5,020 was the fourth time this year the Spikes have welcomed more than 5,000 fans into Medlar Field at Lubrano Park for a single game.
