Lowell Spinners News Release

BROOKLYN, NY - The Brooklyn Cyclones jumped out to an early lead and broke the game open on a home run in the sixth, topping the Lowell Spinners and taking 2-of-3 in the critical match-up between the two teams competing for the Wild Card, 5-1, Thursday night at MCU Park.

Brooklyn (32-28) jumped out to the early lead. Jeffry Fernandez, making his Spinners debut, hit John Mora to lead off the first inning. A one-out walk by Michael Conforto was compounded when an Alison Suarez pick-off attempt went awry, moving both men into scoring position. After a walk loaded the bases, Tomas Nido plated a pair with a single before Nido was thrown out at the plate and Nido at second for the odd inning ending double play.

Lowell (28-31) halved the lead in the fifth inning after Alixon Suarez reached on a throwing error with one out. After a Raymel Flores single moved Suarez into scoring position, a Mauricio Dubon force scored Suarez to bring the Spinners within a run at 2-1.

The Cyclones responded in the bottom half of the inning, plating a run on a balk by Fernandez before the right-hander was chased with two outs and the Cyclones ahead, 3-1.

Brooklyn extended their lead in the sixth inning when Jhoan Urena followd a lead-off single by Conforto with a two-run home run to left, breaking the score open and putting the Cyclones ahead, 5-1.

The Spinners would stand a pair in both the seventh and eighth inning before being retired in order in the ninth for the 5-1 final.

Fernandez (0-1, 5.79) jumped into the Spinners rotation, taking the turn of Kevin McAvoy, to allow three runs on three hits and four walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out one before giving way to Rob Smorol, who was charged with two runs on three hits and a walk over 3.1 innings of relief, striking out four.

Batting leadoff, Dubon had two hits and the Spinners lone RBI, while Flores and Joseph Monge each added two-hit nights. The Spinners however were just 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position, stranding seven as they dropped back in the playoff chase.

The team now heads to Fishkill, NY for a three-game set with the Hudson Valley Renegades. McAvoy (0-2, 3.31) should get the ball for the 7:05 first pitch.
