Jammers Take Two from Doubledays

JAMESTOWN, NY - After mother nature kept the Jamestown Jammers and Auburn Doubledays out of action for the past two days, the two teams finally had the opportunity to square off in a doubleheader Thursday evening at Diethrick Park. When the dust settled, the Jammers emerged victorious in both contests, taking game one 3-1, and game two 4-3.
In game one, Auburn struck first, with a first inning run off of Jamestown starter Frank Duncan. Auburn right fielder Brian Langlois would begin the game with a single through the hole at shortstop. He would then score on a double down the right field line by the next batter, second basemen Austin Davidson, to put Auburn up 1-0.
Duncan would settle down on the mound for the Jammers after that, and pitch extremely effectively in six innings of work. He would only give up five hits, that one first inning run, and he struck out nine Doubledays, which was a season high for the 13th round pick in 2014 out of the University of Kansas.
The Jammer offense came alive in the bottom of the fifth inning. They would score three runs off Doubleday reliever, James Bourque. Catcher Taylor Gushue would lead-off the inning with a single to center field. First basemen David Andriese, and third basemen Francisco Aponte would then walk to load the bases with nobody out. Shortstop Trace Tam Sing then legged out an infield single, which scored Gushue and tied the game at 1 apiece, with the bases still loaded for Jamestown. The next batter, second basemen Erik Lunde, connected on a 2-RBI single to put the Jammers ahead for good, 3-1.
After Duncan's six innings of work, Eric Karch came on for the Jammers to pitch the top of the seventh. He would toss a perfect inning, strike out two, and earn his third save of the season. Right fielder Michael Suchy, Gushue, Tam Sing, and Lunde picked up the four hits for the Jammers.
Game two would remain scoreless until the bottom of the third inning, when the Jammers exploded for three runs off Auburn starter Austen Williams. Second basemen Nathan Sopena began the rally with a single up the middle. Shortstop Erik Forgione moved Sopena over to second with a sac bunt. Center fielder Elvis Escobar then singled to put runners on the corners with one out. Sopena would cross the plate on a groundout by left fielder Carl Anderson, and Escobar would advance to second on the play. Designated hitter Jordan Luplow walked, and Escobar stole third, and would later score on a wild pitch for the second run of the inning. Luplow advanced to second on that same wild pitch, and would come around to score on an RBI single by Michael Suchy to put the Jammers ahead 3-0 after three.
Jamestown would add another run in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI single by catcher Deybi Garcia to push their lead to 4-0.
That insurance run would loom large, as the Doubledays would rally in their last at-bat against Jamestown reliever Miguel Rosario. Auburn would score three runs in the top of the seventh, highlighted by a 2-run single by catcher Kyle Bacak, and an RBI double by second basemen Willie Medina. But, with runners on second and third and two outs, Eric Dorsch would relieve Rosario and record the final out, and seal the doubleheader sweep for the Jammers.
Jamestown starter Montana DuRapau pitched very well in five innings of work. He would only surrender three hits, no runs, and he managed to strike out five Doubledays. Rosario would give up the three runs in 1 2/3 innings, and Dorsch would pick up his third save of the season after recording the tense last out.
The Jammers will welcome the Batavia Muckdogs to Diethrick Park Friday night at 7:05pm. It is Shults Auto Group Community Night at the ballpark, and fans can stop by any area Shults dealership for tickets to the game.
