WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY - In a matchup of the teams with the two best records in the New York-Penn League, the Tri-City ValleyCats fell to the host Hudson Valley Renegades 5-1 on Saturday night in the first game of a three-game set at Dutchess Stadium.

The Renegades got on the board early, as Braxton Lee led off the bottom of the first with a triple off of 'Cats starter Randall Fant, then scored on a ground out by Coty Blanchard.

In the third frame, Tri-City tied up the game when second baseman Alex Hernandez drove home catcher Alfredo Gonzalez with a one-out RBI single to left field.

Fant rebounded from allowing the first-inning run by retiring nine straight Renegades hitters before Blanchard led off the bottom of the fourth with a single. Hudson Valley eventually loaded the bases with no outs before Fant got Hunter Lockwood, the league's leader in RBIs with 40, to pop up to second base. Then with one out, 'Cats right fielder Ariel Ovando caught a line drive off the bat of Hudson Valley's Jace Conrad, and rifled a throw home to gun down Blanchard attempting to tag from third, completing the inning ending double play.

Unfortunately, the ValleyCats could not hold off the Renegades in the fifth inning, as the host squad pushed three runs across, ending Fant's day after 4.1 frames.

Hudson Valley went on to score an insurance run in the seventh inning, while holding Tri-City's offense in check for the rest of the night.

Despite being held to one run, the 'Cats did get productive offensive performances from Gonzalez, who went 1-3 with a double while also throwing out two Renegades trying to steal second, and first baseman Ricky Gingras, who went 2-4 with a double.

The two teams will return to Dutchess Stadium tomorrow at 5:05pm for the second game of the series. On the mound for Tri-City will be RHP Austin Chrismon (4-2, 3.17), with RHP Nolan Gannon (5-1, 2.79) getting the start for Hudson Valley.
