Three IronBirds Named to New York-Penn League All-Star Roster
August 9, 2014 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Aberdeen, MD - The Baltimore Orioles announced today that the New York-Penn League selected IronBirds Austin Anderson, Jay Gonzalez, and David Hess as members of the 2014 New York-Penn League All-Star roster. The game will be played August 19th at MCU Park in Brooklyn, New York.
Anderson, drafted by the Orioles in the ninth round of this year out of Ole Miss, is currently leading the team with a .330 batting average. His 38 hits are third on the team, and he has struck out just 11 times in 115 at-bats. Splitting his playing time between third base and the designated hitter, Anderson has found a comfort zone in the top third of the IronBirds' lineup. Earlier this season, Anderson had a ten game hitting streak from July 7 to 17. That ten game streak is a team high this season.
Gonzalez was selected by the Orioles in the tenth round out of Mount Olive in North Carolina. Gonzalez leads the team with 13 stolen bases and 20 runs scored. His 42 hits are second most on the team. Through 41 games played, Gonzalez has a .268 batting average and has become the every-day center fielder, patrolling the outfield for 40 games so far this season.
Hess was drafted by the Orioles in the fifth round of this year's draft out of Tennessee Tech. He is 2-1 on the season and has a 1.21 ERA. He has made seven appearances and four starts, earning his first win in Brooklyn at MCU Park on July 5. He has pitched 22.1 innings so far this season, allowing just 16 hits and three runs. He has given up only five walks, fanning 22 opposing hitters.
The trio of IronBirds join 33 previous IronBirds named to the New York-Penn League All-Star game. The list includes Mike Yastrzemski, who is playing for Double-A Bowie, and current Oriole catcher Caleb Joseph.
