Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - After back-to-back walk-off wins the Lowell Spinners had no late inning magic left as the Williamsport Crosscutters scored tied things up with a run in the seventh inning and pushed across the go-ahead run in the eighth, topping the Spinners, 3-2, Saturday evening at LeLacheur Park.
Lowell (25-29) broke through in the first inning. Newly minted New York-Penn League All-Star led off the inning with a single, taking third on a Raymel Flores single before coming in to score on a Jordan Betts sacrifice fly.
The Spinners would extend the lead in the second inning when fellow NYPL All-Star Mauricio Dubon led off the inning with a single of his own. After an error allowed Dubon to move into scoring position, a two-out single by Flores gave the Spinners a 2-0 lead.
Williamsport (26-29) cut the lead in half in the fourth inning. Wilson Garcia greeted Brandon Show with a double. After two quick outs, a squeeze play brought home Garcia to bring the Cutters within a run.
The Crosscutters pulled even in the seventh on a two-out home run by Jan Hernandez, a blast that cleared the J&J Heating and Cooling sign just to the left of the batters eye in centerfield.
One inning later Williamsport took the lead after Cord Sandberg led off the inning with a single up the middle. After Jiandido Tromp struck out, Garcia hit a high chopper that Dubon could not field cleaning. With two outs Derek Campbell delivered a single up the middle, scoring Sandberg and giving the Crosscutters a 3-2 lead.
Lowell had an interesting 1-2-3 ninth inning, as Mars flared a broken bat bloop into shallow centerfield that Tromp made a sliding catch on and Betts flew to deep right to end the game.
On the day he found out he was an NYPL All-Star, Dubon had a three-hit night, while Mars and Flores each had two hit games. The Spinners however went just 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on base in the loss.
Kevin McAvoy started and went three scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while striking out one. Show allowed the one run on two hits, striking out two over two innings. Enfember Martinez allowed the Hernandez home run to suffer a blown save, while Jimenez (3-2, 4.61) was charged with the loss, allowing one run on two hits in two innings.
The two teams meet again Sunday afternoon for a 3:05 first pitch. Jake Drehoff (0-3, 4.53) gets the start on Harry Potter Day at LeLacheur Park.
