
Tigers' Pitching Overpowers Spikes

Norwich, CT "" The Connecticut Tigers (29-26) defeated the State College Spikes (33-22) by the score of 3-1 Saturday night at Dodd Stadium. The Tigers put three runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning to take a 3-0 lead as it was all the run support the pitching needed to pick up the victory.
In the bottom of the first inning, 2B Will Maddox (2-4) put the Tigers in front 1-0 with an RBI double that brought in LF Rashad Brown (1-4) who led off with a single. CF Ross Kivett (1-4) followed with an RBI double that brought in Maddox to score and put the Tigers up 2-0. With runners on the corners RF Mike Gerber (0-2) hit a sacrifice fly that scored Kivett from third base and gave the Tigers a commanding 3-0 lead. It was Gerber's 30th RBI of the season.
The Tigers pitching was phenomenal tonight in the win. Connecticut used four pitchers that combined held State College to just one run on six hits. Starter RHP AJ Ladwig pitched three scoreless innings. RHP Josh Laxer (3-0) picked up his third win of the season after pitching four innings while giving up one run on four hits and struck out four batters. RHP Gabe Hemmer (S, 2) pitched a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his second save of the season. With a runner on second, Hemmer struck out 1B Jake Stone (1-4) who represented the potential tying run to end the game.
In game two of the three-game series, the Tigers RHP Spencer Turnbull (0-2, 4.96) is slated to face Spikes RHP Trey Nielsen (3-2, 1.32). Tomorrow is Dodd Stadium 20 Seasons Card Series Giveaway #3 and is for the first 750 fans. This four-part series of baseball card giveaways will honor some of the greatest players to have played at Dodd Stadium over the first 20 seasons of its existence. It is also Sunday Funday: Kids Run the Bases & Have a Catch! Fun in the sun at Dodd Stadium! All kids are invited to Run the Bases and receive a coupon for free ice cream from Ben & Jerry's.
