Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Big First Inning Leads To Lopsided Win
The Aberdeen IronBirds used six hits to score five runs in the bottom of the first inning last night and pounded the Vermont Lake Monsters 8-2 in the series finale. Vermont starter A.J. Burke went three innings, allowing 10 hits and six runs, striking out one. He took the loss as Hector Veloz, Oswill Lartiguez, Tanner Murphy, and Cory Segui each had extra base hits in the first inning. Jay Gonzalez and Steve Wilkerson also had singles as each of them except for Segui scored in the first inning. David Hess was dominant on the mound, earning his second professional win. He went five innings, allowing four hits and one run, striking out a new career high six Lake Monsters. Luc Rennie pitched the final four innings in relief, striking out six batters and allowing just two hits and one run, walking two. Rennie earned his first save of the season, and the second of his career. His first save came on August 15, 2012 with the GCL Orioles.
Segui Swinging A Hot Bat
Cory Segui has been swinging a hot bat recently. Outside of a one at-bat, pinch hit appearance in the ninth inning of Thursday night's game, Segui has had two hits in each of his last three complete games played. In those three games, he is 6-12 with two doubles and two RBIs. He has raised his batting average 60 points in the recent hot streak.
Tonight's Pitching Effort Brought to You By the Letter 'K'
Between David Hess and Luc Rennie, the two combined to strike out 12 Lake Monster batters. Hess struck out the side in the first inning, and also ended his night by striking out Kyle Wheeler to finish off the fifth inning. Rennie started his outing by fanning four of the first six batters he saw. There were only two innings that the Lake Monsters did not strike out last night- the second and ninth.
