READING, Pa. - The Norfolk Admirals allowed two goals in the third period in a 3-2 defeat to the Reading Royals Saturday night at Santander Arena.

After 29 scoreless minutes of play, the Admirals lit the scoreboard first on a redirection goal from rookie Alexandre Ranger. On the power play, Jonathan Lessard moved the puck back to the top of the zone for Gabriel Verpaelst. From the right point, Verpaelst released a shot for net that Ranger knocked down on the way to beat Reading goaltender Connor Knapp at 9:42 of the second period.

The Royals finally lit the lamp when Mike Pereira snapped a perfectly placed wrister inside the top left corner past Norfolk netminder Ty Rimmer. Cam Reid and Adam Comrie earned assists on the equalizer at 12:32 of the second.

Over five minutes later, Marcus Hinds deflected a Reading pass deep in the Royals' zone to Josh Currie low in the slot. Currie collected the turnover and lifted a point-blank shot behind Knapp for a 2-1 advantage at 2:05 of the middle frame. The Admirals took the one-goal lead into the second intermission.

The slim lead lasted nearly 13 minutes into the final period before Justin Crandall evened the count at 2-2. Maxim Lamarche threw a shot on net that hit a body in front of net, and Crandall swooped in to smack the loose puck through.

A late five-on-three penalty against the Admirals handed Reading a chance to take their first lead of the night. Seconds into the two-man advantage, Riley Armstrong looked to have lifted the Royals to a lead, but it was reviewed by officials and waived off as a kicking motion.

However, Reading broke through with a slap shot from Adam Comrie 42 seconds into the five-on-three. After swinging the puck around the zone, Comrie finally pulled the trigger from the right circle, lighting the lamp at 16:37 of the third.

Norfolk had a little over three minutes to force overtime, but another late penalty thwarted the comeback attempt, and the Admirals fell, 3-2, to the Royals.

Rimmer saved 43 of 46 total shots in the loss, and Reading's Knapp denied 23 of 25 opportunities. Each team capitalized on a power play, as Norfolk had two man advantages and the Royals had five.

The Admirals stay in Reading for another clash with the Royals tomorrow at 5 p.m.
