Cyclones Force OT Late But K-Wings Prevail at Home

Kalamazoo Wings News Release
KALAMAZOO, MI- Joel Martin stopped 37 shots, and Justin Taylor netted the overtime winner to give the Kalamazoo Wings a 2-1 victory over the Cincinnati Cyclones on Saturday night at Wings Event Center on the annual honor our heroes game presented by AmeriFirst Home Mortgage.
Despite a sluggish start to the game, Kalamazoo struck for the game's first tally. Working on a five-on-three advantage, the Wings feverishly cycled the puck back to the blue line where Adam Phillips found Cory Pritz whose long slap shot found the top corner for his first professional goal. Alex Mallet picked up the secondary assist to push his point-streak to five games.
Coming into the contest, Cincinnati boasted the second ranked power play in the ECHL, while Kalamazoo's penalty kill had struggled, entering Saturday's game ranked 28th in the league. Beginning the second period with four consecutive trips to the penalty box in a span of 10:29, the Wings were able to hold the league's second ranked power play at bay and carry their 1-0 lead into the second intermission. The Cyclones outshot Kalamazoo 14-5 in the period.
Kalamazoo found their feet throughout the third period, but the Cyclones would find the equalizer in the dying moments of the game. With the extra attacker, Cincinnati held the puck in the offensive zone and Joe Pendenza fed a backdoor pass to the tape of Branden Gracel who pushed the puck past Martin, with just forty-one seconds left.
It didn't take long for the Wings to find the game-winner in the three-on-three overtime. Pritz pushed the puck to Taylor in the defensive zone, allowing Taylor to carry in on Cyclones' net minder Neil Conway, and lift a backhander over the glove of Conway, for Kalamazoo's first victory in the three-on-three overtime format.
Notes: Alex Mallet extended his point streak to five games. Dane Fox had his point streak snapped at six games. Kalamazoo won their first contest in three-on-three overtime. Joel Martin stopped 37 of the 38 shots he faced. Kalamazoo is 2-1-0 on the year against Cincinnati.
