Providence Bruins News Release
Allentown, PA - The Providence Bruins fell to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms Saturday night 3-0, dropping their second match-up of the season to the number one team in the Atlantic Division. The P-Bruins were shutout for the fourth time this season while Jordan Binnington made his 22nd start of the season in net.
The first period was scoreless, but saw great back-and-forth action from both sides. Lehigh Valley had the better of the looks in the first half of the period, with their best chance coming on an early power play. However, P-Bruins defenseman Emil Johansson stopped the puck from crossing the goal line with a great stick save. Providence turned up the heat offensively in the second half of the opening period, leading in shots 15-11 after 20 minutes. Despite several chances for both teams and hard-hitting action, the P-Bruins and Phantoms entered the break scoreless.
Despite Providence getting their second power play of the night, Lehigh Valley struck first 11:36 into the second period. Tyrell Goulbourne created a turnover in front of his bench and entered his offensive zone. He fed Radel Fazleev in front, and Fazleev beat Binnington over his right shoulder for his third goal of the season. Late in the period the P-Bruins earned their third power play of the night, but unfortunately the result of their second man-advantage repeated itself. This time it was Phil Varone who created the turnover near the bench, entered the zone and beat Binnington for the unassisted goal. His 20th of the season gave Lehigh Valley a 2-0 lead into the second intermission.
The offense struggled to get going for Providence, as the early chances they were getting against Lehigh Valley goaltender Dustin Tokarski were not developing like they were in the first. The Phantoms put the final nail in the coffin with 5:10 left in the game, as Steven Swavely put home the rebound of a Colin McDonald shot for his third goal of the season. The P-Bruins had two power plays in the period, but failed to break up the shut out and fell to the first-place Phantoms 3-0.
Binnington stopped 31 of 34 shots while Tokarski stopped all 33 he faced. Providence was 0-5 on the power play and 3-3 on the penalty kill. The P-Bruins will conclude their weekend tomorrow afternoon at home when they welcome the Bridgeport Sound Tigers to the Dunk at 3:05pm.
