March 17, 2018 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Manitoba Moose News Release
The Manitoba Moose (38-17-4-4) and San Antonio Rampage (29-25-10-0) met for the third time this season Friday night at AT&T Center in San Antonio. The hosts were anything but welcoming, opening the scoring 2:57 into the contest as Mason Geertsen sneaked a sharp angle shot by Jamie Phillips. The Moose goaltender locked things down from there, making 16 saves in the opening period. Phillips got some help from the Moose power play as Michael Spacek started a slick passing play that ran through Nic Petan before finishing with Patrice Cormier at 11:06. The teams wrapped up the frame tied 1-1.
The second period was a defensive struggle with the squads combining for just 10 shots in the frame. Manitoba's best chance came as Buddy Robinson centered for Mike Sgarbossa, whose attempt hit the post. At the other end, the Rampage had a pair of close calls with Phillips making a good stop on a breakaway and getting some help from the post on the second chance. Neither team could find the back of the net in the period to send the clubs to the third still deadlocked at 1-1.
The defensive battle carried over into the final frame as offence continued to be at a premium. San Antonio regained the lead 7:09 into the period on an Andrew Agozzino wraparound. The Manitoba offence waited until last call to come up with a tying marker. With Jamie Phillips on the bench, Cormier worked the puck free to Mason Appleton who rifled home the tying goal with 67 seconds left on the clock. Overtime only needed one shot and 54 seconds to decide a winner. Nic Petan accepted the puck from Cameron Schilling in his own end before heading down the ice, and knifing through three Rampage defenders to bury the winner and lift the Moose to a 3-2 victory.
