Lake Erie Crushers News Release
SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - The Lake Erie Crushers dropped consecutive games to start the series against the Schaumburg Boomers, falling 2-1 Monday night.
The loss for the Crushers (33-29) was their second in a row, the first time they have lost consecutive games since July 11-12th. The win for the Boomers (36-26) was their fifth in a row and second against Lake Erie in five games.
All the offense occurred in the third inning of this one, with Lake Erie scoring just one run on five hits in the top half and the Boomers answering with two runs in the bottom frame. All runs were charged to Crushers starter Jason Wilson (6-4) who made his first start of the season.
Adam Ford and Ryan Hutchison both singled to lead off the only run-scoring frame for Lake Erie on the night. After Cody Elle (2-1) struck out Kevin Franchetti, Juan Sanchez also singled, but Hutchison made a baserunning mistake and was tagged out at second base for out number two. Trevor Stevens then singled to plate Ford, but that would be the only run the Crushers would plate. Five singles in the inning (Craig Hertler would single later) led to just one run.
Schaumburg answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead. Wilson walked Gerard Hall to start the inning and then allowed a single to Michael Valadez to put runners on first and second with nobody out. After retiring one batter, Alexi Colon singled to right to score Hall from second and tie the game. The Boomers took the lead on a two-out single by Tyler Sciaaca later in the inning.
The 2-1 score would hold throughout the entirety of the game. Lake Erie would manage just four hits outside of their five-hit third inning. Schaumburg had half of their six hits in the third inning and wouldn't be able to capitalize on any other opportunities.
Eddie Cody (2-1) earned the victory allowing just the lone run on six hits in seven innings of work, while striking out four batters. Jason Wilson (6-4) took the loss in his first start of the season but didn't have a bad outing by any means. He didn't allow a hit outside of the third inning, giving up the two runs on three hits in four innings of work in all.
In a game where eight of the nine Lake Erie batters reached base safely, Juan Sanchez and Andrew Davis led the charge with two hits each. Sanchez extended his hitting streak to 13 games in the process and the two-hit game for Davis was his fourth straight multi-hit game. Craig Hertler's single in the third inning meant that he has now reached base safely in 15 straight games. Anderson Hidalgo also singled in the game to up his on base streak to double digits as well, at 10.
The Crushers will look to avoid being swept by the Boomers tomorrow afternoon. Left-hander Matt Rein (0-4, 5.77) will pitch for Lake Erie and the Boomers will counter with righty Cal Bowling (5-5, 5.66). First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 AM.
