(Marion, IL) - Niko Vasquez drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 12th inning and the Southern Illinois Miners (37-25) defeated the Florence Freedom (25-35) by a final score of 4-3 Monday night.
With the loss the Freedom drop to a season worst 10 games under .500 and fall to 1-6 in extra innings games.
Florence took the early lead for the second straight night as they plated two runs in the top of the second against Southern Illinois starter Matt Bywater. Rob Kelly singled to start the frame and one out later Adam Taylor drew a walk. Preston Overbey singled to load the bases and Michael Wilson hit a grounder to short. The throw to second got Overbey for out number two but Frank Martinez's throw to first was wild and two runs scored for the Freedom.
In the bottom of the second the Miners responded right away against Freedom starter Casey Henn. Aaron Gates singled to start the inning and one out later Steve Marino launched his second home run of the season to tie the game at two.
They took the lead in the third as Marquis Riley led off with a single. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Vasquez single up the middle.
The Miners held their 3-2 lead until the top of the ninth. Henn pitched well for the Freedom, going seven innings, scattering five hits, giving up three runs, walking one and striking out six.
With one out in the top of the ninth, Wilson smacked his third home run of the season to tie the game against Southern Illinois closer Derrick Miramontes.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the 12th. Pitcher Britt Robertshaw (3-1) started the inning with a single off Daniel DeSimone (3-3). Two outs later DeSimone walked back-to-back batters on four straight pitches to load the bases. His first pitch to Vasquez was a strike but the next three were balls as the Miners won the game on the walk-off walk.
The Freedom will try to take the series finale Tuesday night as they send Dave Middendorf (4-5, 4.10 ERA) to the mound. First pitch is set for 8:05 p.m. eastern time and all the action can be heard on http://www.allinbroadcasting.com/Florence.html.
