Evansville Otters News Release
(EVANSVILLE, INDIANA) - The Evansville Otters (38-23) received a walk-off RBI single from John Schultz to pick up a doubleheader split against the Washington Wild Things and earn a share for first place of the Frontier League East Division.
Washington won the first game 2-0 but Evansville responded for a 4-3 comeback win in the doubleheader finale at historic Bosse Field.
Game one began with the Wild Things taking a 1-0 lead against Otters starter Blake Monar. Outfielder Dan Poma walked to begin the game, stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error and scored on a Scott Kalamar sacrifice fly.
Evansville nearly tied the game in the second. Outfielder Chris Elder reached on a leadoff double but pitcher Troy Marks retired three of the next four batters to end the inning.
Washington added an insurance run with a Carter Bell fielder's choice in the sixth. Marks (2-0) used the two-run lead to his advantage, striking out 11 hitters in his two-hit complete game shutout. Monar (1-4) took the loss, despite a complete game four hit performance, allowing two runs (one earned).
The Wild Things started out game two with another early lead. Otters starter Mike DeLong lasted just 1.1 innings, allowing two second inning runs. Washington tacked on a run in the fourth for the 3-0 edge, only to see Evansville rally back for three runs in the bottom of the inning. After the Wild Things removed starter Zach LeBarron from the game, reliever Pat Butler allowed an RBI single to Chris Sweeney. Ahead 3-1, Butler then threw a wild pitch that led to two more runs following a subsequent throwing error from catcher Jim Vahalik.
Collazo and left-hander Jose Velez went a combined 5.2 innings, yielding just one run and keeping Evansville in the game. Tied at three, pinch hitter Phillip Wilson led off the seventh with a single, moved to second on a Cory Urquhart sacrifice bunt and then scored on Schultz' single to left field.
Evansville is off on Tuesday but at River City to begin a three game series against the Rascals on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 7:05 pm CDT at T.R. Hughes Ballpark in O'Fallon, Missouri. The game will be broadcast live on WUEV 91.5FM with the Otters pregame show beginning at 6:45 pm CDT.
