Lake Erie Crushers News Release
SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - The Lake Erie Crushers were unable to avoid being swept by the Schaumburg Boomers, falling 8-2 on Tuesday afternoon.
The loss for Lake Erie (33-30) marked just the second time they have been swept all season, and capped a 2-4 road trip. The win for Schaumburg (37-26) was their sixth in a row and third against Lake Erie in six games.
The Crushers had the same amount of hits, 11, as the Boomers, but were unable to capitalize with runners on base, leaving 12 on throughout the game. Lake Erie stayed within one run until the seventh inning when Schaumburg plated five runs to break the game open.
The Boomers opened the scoring with a run in the first. Joe De Pinto singled with one out off of lefty Matt Rein, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on two-out single from Mark Nelson.
The Crushers had a hit in each of the first two innings, but finally came through with a run in the third. Trevor Stevens singled with one out and advanced to third on a base knock by Juan Sanchez. The very next batter Craig Hertler hit a fly ball to left field to score Stevens and tie up the game at one.
However, the Boomers retook the lead moments later. Back to back singles from Alexi Colon and De Pinto started the bottom half of the third inning and they moved into scoring position thanks to a bunt from Tyler Sciacca. Rein then walked Mark Nelson to load the bases and allowed a single to Ty Nelson to give the Boomers the lead once again, 3-1.
Lake Erie answered back once again, getting within one run in the fourth inning. Back to back one-out walks to Vincent Mejia and Joey Burney put runners at first and second with one out. Mejia was gunned down at third trying to steal, but Burney was able to advance to second and scored on a double from Ryan Hutchison.
The Crushers had a big chance to tie or take the lead in the top of the seventh. They used two singles and a walk to load the bases with two outs for Anderson Hidalgo. However, Clark Labitan got Hidalgo to fly out to right to end the threat.
After escaping trouble in the top half, Schaumburg put the Crushers away with five runs in the bottom half. Brad Duffy allowed a single and a walk before recording the first two outs in the inning. The Boomers then put together some two-out magic against All-Star Jordan McCoy. The first batter he faced, Ty Nelson, doubled to score both Colon and Sciacca and give Schaumburg a three-run advantage. McCoy then issued back to back walks to load the bases, before allowing a bases clearing double to Michael Valadez to give the Boomers the 8-2 advantage and eventual final margin of victory.
Cal Bowling (6-5) earned the victory allowing six hits and two earned runs in five innings of work. Matt Rein (0-5) took the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits in six innings of work.
In a game where every Crusher reached base, Joey Burney, Ryan Hutchison, and Trevor Stevens led the way with two hits each. Burney reached base in all four plate appearances. Juan Sanchez singled in the third inning to extend his hitting streak to 14 games and Craig Hertler and Anderson Hidalgo extended their on-base streaks to 16 and 11 respectively. The Crushers return home for six games starting tomorrow night with the first of three games against the Windy City ThunderBolts. Zach Gordon (1-2, 2.39) will pitch for Lake Erie in game one. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
