Normal CornBelters News Release
O'Fallon, Mo. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, won their first extra inning contest in three tries with a 6-3 triumph in 12 innings on Monday night at T.R. Hughes Ballpark.
The CornBelters opened the scoring in the second inning by loading the bases and scoring a pair of runs with a base hit by Pat McKenna and a sacrifice fly by Tyler Shover. The Rascals countered with a lead-off home run in the second inning by Brian McConkey.
The Belters pushed their advantage to 3-1 when Santiago Chirino doubled home Pat McKenna, who had led off the fourth inning with a two-base hit.
The Rascals cut the deficit to 3-2 without the baseball leaving the infield when McConkey led off with a bunt single, stole second, went to third on a fielder's choice and scored on a tapper by Brian Hansen barely up the third base line. Hansen tied the game by barely beating the throw on a single by Hector Crespo to left.
The game remained even into extra innings as the Belters loaded the bases with one out in the 11th inning but a double play ended the threat. The Belters broke through in the next frame as McKenna led off with a double and was singled home by Shover. A sacrifice moved Shover to second and he scored on a single by Chirino, who went to third on an errant throw and scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Eric Anderson to complete the scoring.
Chris Carmain (2-0) picked up the win while the loss went to Ethan Carter (2-4). Alan Oaks pitched a scoreless 12th for his eighth save.
The series concludes Tuesday in O'Fallon with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch as CornBelters right-hander Bobby Shore (3-4, 4.43 ERA) matches up against Rascals righty Kyle Brady (0-2, 6.91). Pre-game begins at 5:50 at www.normalbaseball.com . The Belters return home Wednesday to begin a six-game home stand over five days beginning with a three-game series with the Southern Illinois Miners.
