Joliet Slammers News Release
The Joliet Slammers-Presented by ATI Physical Therapy-used great pitching and timely offense to beat Traverse City 3-1 on the road on Tuesday.
This great dual was scoreless until the 7th inning when the Slammers finally broke through against the Beach Bums' Casey Delgado. Joliet stranded six men in the 1st six innings but in the 7th Chris Epps came up with a 2-out 2-run double to score Seth Granger. Granger had reached on a dropped-third-strike and error. Kody McFarland was outstanding for the Slammers as he went 6 2/3 innings before being lifted. He allowed one run on a 7th inning bloop RBI double from Jake Rhodes. McFarland allowed five hits while striking out 8 and walking only one in his outing. Joliet broke the 1-1 tie in the 8th off reliever Chuck Ghysels on a long home run from Adam Giacalone. They added to it in the 9th on another RBI from Epps on a single to make it 3-1. Jordan Wellander picked up the win in relief and David Kubiak earned the save in the 9th.
Joliet had gone 0-6 in 2-run games on the season until the 2-0 win on Monday and then this 3-1 win on Tuesday, so they improve to 2-6 in that statistic. The Slammers also take the series 2 games to 1. It's their 1st series win since mid June. Grant DeBruin singled in the 6th to give him a 12-game hitting streak. He entered the game leading the Frontier League in batting average and hits. Epps finished with 3 hits and 2 RBI on the day, while Giacalone had two hits.
The Slammers will return for a six-game home-stand beginning Wednesday July 30th at 7:05pm. The Frontier Greys and then the Schaumburg Boomers will be the opposition in Joliet. There will be a Thirsty Thursday with 2-buck drafts and then a Fireworks Friday on August 1st, that will also be Princess Night at Silver Cross Field.
