Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI - Adam Giacalone hit a solo homer in the top of the eighth inning, providing the go-ahead run for the Joliet Slammers, who knocked off the Traverse City Beach Bums 3-1 on Tuesday night at Wuerfel Park.
Giacalone's blast off Chuck Ghysels broke a 1-1 stalemate that was scoreless through the first six innings. A strikeout, throwing error allowed Seth Granger to get to second base with one out in the top of the seventh for Joliet. He scored two batters later on a Chris Epps single to give the Slammers a 1-0 lead.
Traverse City responded with a run in the bottom of the seventh on a Jake Rhodes double, plating Jovan Rosa to even the game. Giacalone's solo shot would push the Slammers ahead and they would add on to the lead with an Epps RBI single in the top of the ninth inning. The Beach Bums got the tying run to the plate in the last of the ninth, but David Kubiak struck out Josh Miller to pick up his first save of the year.
Casey Delgado and Kody McFarland started for Traverse City and Joliet, respectively, and were absolutely brilliant. Delgado, who settled for a no-decision, gave up just the unearned run in the top of the seventh on six hits. He struck out five over seven innings. McFarland countered with 6.2 frames of his own, yielding a run on five hits with eight strikeouts in what turned out to be a no-decision.
Jordan Wellander (4-1) picked up the win with 1.1 scoreless innings of relief for the Slammers. Ghysels (1-3) gave up two runs in two innings, but did strike out four batters in his outing.
Traverse City now welcomes in the Schaumburg Boomers for a three-game series. Rusty Shellhorn (4-2, 4.02) starts for the Beach Bums while the Boomers will counter with Danny Jimenez (5-3, 3.55). First pitch on Wednesday is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. As part of Winning Wednesday at Wuerfel Park, the first 250 fans 18 and over with a photo ID will receive a free lottery scratcher. Those unable to make the game can listen to the broadcast starting at 6:45 p.m. on Classic Rock the Bear 98.1/107.1 and classicrockthebear.com.
